All About the Role

The Head of Engineering role for Platform Application Services will be responsible for the leadership of an engineering organisation within a global domain. They will be accountable for defining and executing technical strategy in alignment with pillar leadership as well as ensuring platform operation & stability.

As a people manager, you will be responsible for goal setting & measurement, hiring & retention, prioritisation, culture development.

These are some of the key ingredients to the role:

• You will be responsible for leading a high performing, distributed, engineering organisation across a global domain. Capable of operating at scale.
• Take responsibility for the development and performance management of leaders at different levels within your organisation.
• You will develop and execute a technical strategy, ensuring that it aligns with the broader pillar strategy and company technical vision.
• You will be responsible for the technical aspects of your pillar’s roadmaps in alignment with the product team.
• You will encourage and foster a culture of collaboration across the wider technology department, manage both technical and non-technical stakeholders and communicate effectively and timely.
• You will foster an engineering culture that is value-outcome-driven, promotes quality, agility and ownership.
• You are interested in engineering experiences and actively propose enhancements in this area, while also motivating your reports to do the same.
• You are familiar with the roadmaps of your teams, and reach out to align them with other infrastructure and engineering teams across the company.
• You delegate appropriate technical choices to your teams, and help them make those decisions where they are torn between multiple options.
• You set goals for your teams, making sure that following the 5 Platform Engineering key values (reliable, easy, fast, global, insightful) are adhered to at all times.
• You have an understanding of distributed systems design and operation, and are able to lead a technical organisation responsible for providing tools and solutions to engineering teams in that context.
• You assist the teams in setting their long term goals, and help them out identifying how they reach their north stars.

What will you bring to the table?

• You have a demonstrated passion in improving engineering practice and tooling, and understand the needs of software engineers building systems and processes at scale in a distributed, microservice, event-driven architecture.
• Previous experience of managing various technical leaders.
• Experience in effectively managing multiple distributed engineering teams.
• Proven experience of building, communicating, and executing a technical strategy.
• You can think both with a developer and operational mindset, and know how each can contribute to achieving the goals of the other.
• Experience in bringing teams together across different areas of an org to achieve a common goal.
• Experience managing people and teams through growth and change.
• Proven ability to communicate technical concepts/approaches to non technical stakeholders.
• Experience of working with and leading through ambiguity.
• Experience in guiding teams towards building secure, scalable solutions in line with global target architectures.
• Experience in building a strong engineering culture, with an emphasis on quality and delivery.
• Experienced in coaching and mentoring - understanding how to help people to grow and how to play to their strengths
• Proven Team Player, with experience of working as part of a leadership team to achieve common goals.
