We have a fantastic new opportunity for a Head of Engineering to join our growing team, to take responsibility for electrical safety and to establish a high performing Engineering department that partners across the AMP Group, playing a pivotal role in our growth.

About the role:


Reporting to the CEO, the Head of Engineering will oversee all engineering design, ensuring that the correct strategy and processes for engineering design, technology selection, compliance and quality control are in place to support the growth of the business. This will include implementing and overseeing a robust framework and process for project and equipment acceptance and ensuring the effective management of defects with both technology manufacturers, and installation and design subcontractors.


The Head of Engineering will be AMP’s Responsible Electrical Person (REP) with responsibility for electrical safety. Partnering across all areas of the business (including the project development, project delivery, and operational teams), to ensure all electrical installation, repair and isolation works are undertaken in line with Company policy and electrical safety rules.


Key responsibilities:


  • To effectively lead the engineering function and partner across the group, overseeing all electrical installation, troubleshooting, repair and isolation works and ensuring safety and compliance standards are met
  • Acting as the Group’s Responsible Electrical Person (REP) with responsibility for electrical safety (HV and LV systems)
  • To oversee all engineering decisions and to define and implement an engineering strategy aligned to the business objectives
  • Monitoring sub-contractors and contracts ensuring that they are technically compliant with relevant Company standards
  • Operating as the senior technical authority and subject matter expert for high-voltage electrical systems, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and standards
  • Management of the operating systems and controls
  • Assessing and managing the risks associated with electrical work activities, including ensuring the appropriate control measures are in place
  • Developing the group electrical policy and ensure this is effectively communicated, embedded, complied with and is updated as required
  • To develop a design and review framework and ensure this process is managed consistently, document controls are in place and to ensure change controls are implemented
  • Reviewing and approving electrical drawings and design proposals for new projects
  • Overseeing all project design and tender technical specifications, ensuring excellent quality control and making sure that projects are built to the required specification and meet safety and compliance standards
  • Conducting regular audits and inspections of electrical equipment, facilities, and work practices to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety requirements
  • Providing electrical and wider technical support to the business, supporting the Project Development team with developing customer solutions in battery storage, reserve power, electric and biomass boiler installations and other technologies
  • Assessing the competency of all individuals engaged in electrical works, and ensure training and mentoring takes place to enable upskilling and high performance of our own engineers


What we are looking for:


A dedicated, resilient and motivated individual who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and has the following knowledge, skills and experience:


  • Degree-level qualification in an Electrical Engineering discipline or equivalent up to Masters or Chartered status
  • A recognised Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH or IOSH or equivalent training
  • Demonstrable experience of leading an engineering team and delivering large projects (£10m plus)
  • Experience of electrical design, design review and electrical installation verification and acceptance
  • Excellent understanding of high-voltage electrical systems, equipment, and protective devices
  • Extensive practical experience in electrical and controls engineering (HV and LV)
  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety regulations, codes, and standards
  • Sound knowledge of energy systems and grid integration
  • Excellent leadership skills to take charge, provide clear direction and drive high team engagement and performance in a positive way
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to assess risks, make sound decisions, and troubleshoot electrical system issues
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to various internal or external stakeholders
  • A strong decision maker – ability to assess a situation, problem solve and confidently come up with the best course of action possible
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • A critical thinker, using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • A high concern for ensuring excellent operational and safety standards and compliance
  • Ability to go above and beyond to support business needs, including being adaptive to change and assisting the team or other departments where required.

Additional Information:

  • Location: London, W1S 4LD
  • Office based with frequent travel to sites required
  • Competitive salary to be discussed at interview
  • Hours of work: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 09:00-18:00 with 1-hour unpaid lunch
