Length of role: Initial 6 months.
An esteemed local authority in Leeds is seeking a highly experienced and qualified Head of Finance to join the team on an interim basis. The role is pivotal in supporting the finance team through a critical period of account closures and the implementation of a new financial ledger system.
Day-to-Day of the Role:
- Oversee the timely completion of the 2022/23 statement of accounts, coordinating closely with Grant Thornton’s audit team.
- Prepare the 2023/24 draft accounts for publication within statutory deadlines.
- Lead the implementation of a new financial ledger system, ensuring operational readiness by 1st October.
- Manage and support the accountancy team, ensuring efficient resource allocation for account closures, audit support, and system implementation.
- Maintain and adhere to a strict timetable with key milestones for project delivery.
- Monitor progress against the audit programme, addressing any issues and clarifying responsibilities between the Council and Grant Thornton.
- Review and enhance working papers to meet the auditors’ standards and provide leadership to the finance team.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- A relevant CCAB qualification or equivalent, with extensive senior-level experience in a local authority finance setting.
- Proven track record in managing statutory financial requirements and compliance with relevant codes and regulations for a Council’s Statement of Accounts.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Strong collaboration skills to work closely with external auditors and ensure programme delivery within required timescales.
- Experience in financial management, risk identification and management in relation to account closures and audits.
