Customer Compliance Group (CCG) ensures that HMRC successfully collects the full and accurate amount of money due from taxpayers, investigates offences against the tax system and takes action to identify and mitigate potential threats. CCG is the largest business group in HMRC, with over 26,000 people working in this area.

About Risk Intelligence Services:

HMRC's Risk and Intelligence Service (RIS) collects, integrates and analyses one of the largest and most diverse range of data and intelligence in the world. This enables HMRC to understand and manage risks associated with non-compliance with the UK tax system.

Job description

As a Senior Data Analyst, you will have access to one of the biggest data platforms in UK government.
Our Senior Data Analysts demonstrate high levels of experience and ability when using a range of cutting-edge analytical tools and software, manipulating complex datasets to develop insight and risk.
You will lead on our technical standards of analysis and are responsible for the quality of our analytical products, ensuring standards are upheld and improved. You’ll provide leadership and guidance on big projects and support our Data Analysts on complex profiles, encouraging delivery through others and seeking new and innovative ways of working.

Person specification

Key Responsibilities:

  • Use new tools and techniques to develop your expertise for manipulating large datasets, including a range of taxpayer, government, public and commercially available information
  • Initiate and undertake complex and accurate analysis
  • Train and mentor, our Data Analysts, building their confidence and capability
  • Review, advise and support more junior members, and establish processes, standards and templates for others to follow, improving the efficiency and quality of visualisations
  • Build capability within our analytical community, developing effective and efficient working processes which encourages our people to flourish
  • Advocate data governance and data management standards and guidelines within your team’s products and services

Essential Criteria:

  • Analysis and synthesis – You are able to understand and help teams to apply a range of methods to analyse research data and synthesise findings
  • Communication – You can demonstrate supporting or hosting difficult discussions within the team or with diverse senior stakeholders
  • Data management – You have experience of developing processes to enable good data management practices and compliance with data governance policies
  • Data modelling, cleansing and enrichment - You will ensure data for analysis meets data quality standards and is interoperable with other data sets, enabling reuse and work with other data professionals to improve modelling and integration patterns and standards
  • Logical and creative thinking – You are able to ensure that the most appropriate actions are taken to resolve problems as they occur
  • Project management – You will share knowledge and experience of project management methodologies with others, including tools and techniques
  • Leadership - You have proven experience of leading and/or mentoring others through project work or professional development activities

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Candidates will be asked to give a technical presentation on a recent piece of analysis, further details will be provided closer to the time.

Benefits

Sift

A sift of your CV and Personal Statement will be conducted against the key responsibilities and essential criteria.

Interview

During the panel interview, candidates will be asked to give a technical presentation on a recent piece of analysis, further details will be provided closer to the time. Candidates will also be asked 3 Experience based questions and 3 Strengths based questions.

There is no expectation or requirement for you to prepare for the strengths-based questions in advance of the interview, though you may find it helpful to spend some time reflecting on what you enjoy doing and what you do well.

Interviews will take place via video link. Sift and interview dates to be confirmed.

A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles – if this applies to you, we’ll let you know via your Civil Service Jobs account.

After interview, merit lists will be created for each location advertised within the vacancy. If you are successful at interview, you will be placed on the merit list for any locations you have expressed an interest for. Appointments from each merit list will be made in strict merit order.
