About the role
We are a team of people who love and look after six of the most wonderful palaces in the world and our ambition is to be a charity for everyone, starting from our own employees.
With this in mind, we are developing a wider program of apprenticeships, paid internships, and scholarships, and we are now looking to recruit a Level 2 Horticulture apprentice at Hillsborough Castle.
Your time will be divided between attending classes on relevant subjects and practical experience in the workplace which will include:
Carrying out a wide range of garden duties to a high standard so that the appearance and presentation of the Gardens or Estate is maintained to a very high level.
To work with an experienced member of staff and in time to work independently using initiative and vision.
Range of duties will include:
- Weed control
- Grass cutting
- Hedge cutting
- Pruning
- Maintenance of beds and borders
- Nursery work including Seed sowing ,potting up plants
- Path maintenance
- Maintaining a safe, clean and tidy environment
Skill development will include:
- Identification of a wide selection of plants including all aspects of the appropriate cultivation.
- The safe use of a wide range of horticultural machines and equipment ensuring personal safety by following the related risk assessments.
- Familiarisation with the Gardens general history, landmarks, key visitor locations, access points and other important locations within the Gardens & Estate.
About you
We are looking for someone who is keen to learn and has good attention to details.
Due to the nature of the role, you must be willing to work outside in all weathers and have a suitable level of fitness in order to carry out its fundamental requirements. You must also be able to get transport to and from Greenmount campus weekly.
You will also need good communication skills and the ability to manage your time and workload.
More than anything we are looking for potential, but, as this Apprenticeship starts at Level 2 we do have a few eligibility requirements:
You must be 18 years old or over on 2nd September 2024.
Live in UK (resident in country role is based).
You must not have completed a degree or equivalent level qualification in the UK or elsewhere and not already be in full-time education.
You must have a minimum of Level 1 essential skills in Maths and English
