Job description

Askham Bryan College is a specialist land-based college based across the North of England with centres in York, Middlesbrough, Saltaire, Wakefield and Gateshead.

We offer a wide-ranging curriculum to our Further Education students, including Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Management, Countryside and the Environment, Engineering, Equine, Floristry, Motorsport, Outdoor Adventure Sport, Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness, Uniformed Public Services and Veterinary Nursing.

We define the values and qualities that we require from our people using the Askham Bryan College DNA. Hardwired in to what we do, our DNA strands ensure that all colleagues are committed to delivering with purpose, taking ownership, building trust and always learning.

Our staff benefits include generous holiday pay plus bank holidays, Local Government Pension Scheme, Staff Discounts, Colleague engagement days, Cycle to Work Scheme, ABC Awards (Staff Recognition Scheme), beautiful campuses and free on-site parking (York, Middlesbrough, Gateshead).

Askham Bryan College is a specialist land-based college situated in York. We have a brilliant BIAZA zoological facility which opens to guests on weekends and school holidays. During the week we are open for school visits and Wildlife programmes.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Instructor Keeper to join our Animal Management Department here at our York campus. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is capable of working with others and is responsible, passionate and knowledgeable about the overall animal management sector and has an enthusiastic approach to animal husbandry and welfare. The candidate will be passionate about training the next generation of animal carers, scientists and conservationists.

The instructor part of the post will require you to work with a range of species within the animal department and deliver practical modules to Level 2 and 3 learners including assessments. However, we are looking for someone with a special interest in LVI and in particular (Native Invertebrates/Chelonia) to join our animal keeping team.

This is a full-time permanent role working 37 hours a week including one weekend day.

Applicants should be educated to at least a level 3 in an animal related subject, and a degree in an animal related subject would be advantageous but not essential as experience will also be considered. In return you will receive a generous holiday allowance, ample free parking, canteen facilitates and a range of employee benefits. We offer a pleasant, safe and friendly environment to work within a wonderful, likeminded team.

Successful applicants will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check.

For more information, please refer to the job description and personal specification.

We recognise that high self-esteem, peer support, a secure College environment and clear lines of communication with trusted adults helps all young people and adults particularly those at risk or suffering abuse. These are regarded as central to the wellbeing of the individual and are therefore seen to be an intrinsic part of all aspects of the curriculum and ethos.

  • Will be responsible, on a regular basis in a school or college, for teaching, training instructing, caring for or supervising children or vulnerable adults;
  • Will be working on a regular basis in a specified establishment, such as a school, or in connection with the purposes of the establishment, where the work gives opportunity for contact with children or vulnerable adults; or
  • Engage in intimate or personal care or healthcare or any overnight activity, even if this happens only once.
