Leeds Council is seeking an experienced Head of Finance to join our team on a temporary basis, starting from next month until early to mid-summer. The role is critical to support the finance team through a rigorous period of closing accounts and implementing a new financial ledger system.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Oversee the completion of the 21/22 and 22/23 accounts within the set deadlines, working closely with external auditors and bespoke resources from Grant Thornton.
- Ensure the 23/24 accounts are prepared for publication by 31st May, with the audit commencing in October.
- Lead the implementation of a new financial ledger, operational by 1st October.
- Manage and support the accountancy team, ensuring efficient resource allocation for the completion of two sets of accounts, support for the audit, and the implementation of the new financial system.
- Maintain a rigorous timetable with key milestones to deliver on the project.
- Record progress against the programme, identifying any issues and determining responsibility between Leeds Council and Grant Thornton.
- Review work papers and provide leadership to the finance team.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Extensive experience in a senior finance role, preferably within local government or a similar public sector environment.
- Demonstrated ability to close accounts and manage complex financial projects.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to hit the ground running.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to maintain a rigorous timetable.
- Experience working with auditors and managing external relationships.
