The Apprentice Software Engineer role is part of DVLA's Centre of Digital Excellence, which looks to build skills across our digital roles. You will undertake formal learning alongside building skills and experience in one of DVLA's Digital Teams. You will work alongside industry professionals to shadow, learn and then undertake increasingly complex tasks within your field. You will work on real services as your skills develop and will be part of the DVLA Software Engineering Community. You will work towards the Junior Engineer role, progressing your skills from an Apprentice to this level over a period of time.

Job description

You will be part of an innovative digital delivery community where we learn while we work and solve problems together. We work in a modern development environment using the latest cutting-edge technologies and tools. You will work on systems and services that make a positive difference to the lives of every citizen in the UK.
This programme will combine classroom training with hands on experience, designed to teach you the skills you need to succeed in a long-term career in Software Development.
By end of the programme you will earn Level 3/4 qualification in IT.

Responsibilities

  • You will spend a substantial portion of time shadowing others
  • We will support you in working with other developers to write code and tests
  • You will build your knowledge using a test driven approach
  • You will write code that is automatically tested

Additional Information

Successful candidates will spend up to one day a week in a college/university environment. The rest of their time will provide on-the-job experience, working directly with teams as part of DVLA’s IT community. This is a fantastic opportunity where you will grow your wider skills such as teamwork, resilience, communication, and problem solving.

This role will be based in Swansea, and we will be operating a hybrid working model that allows you to work between home and on-site giving you greater flexibility about where and when you work, subject to business needs and this also allows for ongoing support, development, and collaboration with colleagues.

Therefore, the expectation is that you will spend a minimum of 60% of your working time based at your principal workplace (DVLA). We would encourage you to discuss the working arrangements for this role with us during the recruitment process.

Person specification

You will be motivated and proactive with a passion for a career in Software Development. Good organisational skills will be required. You must be able to work on your own initiative and stay calm under pressure.
Successful applicants will have good analytical skills and take a positive approach to solving problems.

The programme will include undertaking a number of qualifications that will require examinations as well as on-team training. There will be regular assessment points to evaluate the progress and proficiency of candidates. Your learning portfolio will be assessed at checkpoints throughout the programme, failure to successfully meet the standard during checkpoints could result in 3 months’ notice being provided to cease employment.

We reserve the right to seek full or partial repayment of costs associated with your qualification, should you not contribute to the programme, or may include related costs such as exam fees, membership fees or materials.

Eligibility/Qualifications
To be eligible to apply for an apprenticeship, applicants must:

  • Be 16+ when the apprenticeship starts (12th August 2024) to be able to start on this date
  • Have left full-time education
  • Not be in receipt of funding for other learning programmes
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Have valid and eligible residency status and be resident in the UK for 5 years before the start of their apprenticeship

In order to be eligible for our apprenticeship vacancy you must be able to qualify for the apprenticeship funding, any qualifications previously held or currently being worked towards must differ in content so that this apprenticeship provides substantial new skills.

If you therefore currently hold or are working towards a similar qualification (apprenticeship in IT of the same level or higher (Level 3 or 4), then we encourage you to speak with us, so that we can assess suitability, and look to identify an appropriate qualification for you to undertake through the programme.
