Freelancers are eligible to apply for an internal role if they are on a Worker Contract and they have worked continuously for 6 months. If they have worked for less than 6 months continuously or have a break of 3 weeks or more between engagements, they must seek Divisional HR approval to apply for an internal role prior to submitting an application.

Job Introduction


BBC News Northern Ireland are looking for Journalism Assistants on varying contracts to work in its award winning News & Current Affairs department.


This is an incredible opportunity for candidates with an interest in news and current affairs to work across radio and tv output and take their first steps into a career in journalism. Journalism Assistant’s work alongside our production teams on our radio news programmes Good Morning Ulster, Talkback and Evening Extra as well as our TV news bulletin BBC Newsline.


If you have a passion for journalism, storytelling and work well as part of a team then this entry level role could be for you. Full training is provided on the job.

Main Responsibilities


  • Assist the production teams on our radio programmes – Good Morning Ulster, Talkback and Evening Extra.
  • Look after guests and contributors who are visiting the newsroom.
  • Operate the autocue for the 1330 and 183- TV Newsline bulletins.
  • Edit audio, book guests and work on news stories.
  • To come up with ideas in programme meetings.
  • Carry out research for the BBC News NI Digital news teams.
