Job Overview

About the BMA

The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional body and a trade union for doctors in the UK.  We represent, support and negotiate on behalf of all UK doctors and medical students.

About the role

An exciting opportunity to join the BMA's media and news relations team, part of the wider Communications and Policy directorate.

The BMA's media office is extremely busy and we are often at the forefront of national and regional news agendas. This permanent role will provide support to the media team in day-to-day activities with some requirement for data analysis and reporting and research. This role  aims to provide specific support to the day-to-day outputs and has opportunities to develop media and PR skills such as writing, media relations, and drafting briefings.

The role also involves liaising with national ands regional media as well as many of the BMA's elected members and some of our key stakeholders.

This is a hybrid role and will involve a mix of working from home and (min 1 day per week) from BMA House in Central London.

As a Junior Media Officer you will:

  •  Support the National News Lead and the Regional News Lead in undertaking data and case study research tasks and drafting press comments and letters.
  • Conduct analysis and reporting of the BMA’s media coverage at a national a regional level.
  • Provide support to the wider media team in helping triage media inquiries using established protocols, gathering data for briefings, drafting press releases and comments.
  • Any other duties as reasonably directed.

To be successful as a Junior Media Officer you'll ideally have:

  • Experience working in a busy press office - preferably in a national membership organisation or one which has a strong health related theme.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop strong trusted relationships with media and BMA members
  • Have a great eye for a story
  • Ability to translate often complex information into briefings and sections of a press release

We anticipate interviews will take place w/c 8th July.

Why work for us?

We offer a wide range of benefits including:

  • 30 days holiday entitlement plus bank holidays and a BMA company day
  • Double matching pension contributions up to 12% of salary
  • Additional leave entitlement for volunteering or moving house (after completion of probationary period)
  • Onsite gym and subsidised café at BMA House
  • BMA Law - discounted rates for employees requiring legal services such as will writing/conveyancing
  • Multiple flexible benefits and discounts through our employee benefits platform
  • Lots of Learning and Development/training opportunities via our internal learning hub
  • Season ticket loan (up to £10,000) after completion of probationary period

Anonymous recruitment

The BMA endeavours to be an inclusive employer, ensuring fairness and consistency to select the best candidate for roles. To support our aims, we use specific software to remove all personal identifying information from CVs and applications.  Personal information such as name, date of birth, age and gender are anonymised and will only become visible to hiring managers if you are selected for interview.

Whether the role needs you to work at home, in an office or in a hybrid way, we`ll provide all the support you need.

If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, please apply through our website. However,  if you require any reasonable adjustments or additional support at any point during the application process, please email recruitment@bma.org.uk.
