Job description

Overview:
About RM
At RM we provide technology and resources to the education sector, supporting schools, teachers and learners, with one goal, to improve education outcomes worldwide. What we do helps all levels of the industry, from preschool to higher education and professional qualification, our customers include schools, examination boards, central governments and other professional institutions. We have a clear purpose to enrich the lives of learners worldwide.

To better reflect the society that we serve, we’re committed to building a diverse workforce and creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. To achieve this, we create teams of talented people from different backgrounds and experiences and strive to be a business where our people can bring their whole selves to work.

As a Customer-facing Junior Solution Architect in RM, you will work with customers, sales staff and delivery teams to create and deliver solutions to customer problems. These solutions may include processes, services, and a technical solution which together deliver to the customer’s needs. Solution Architects may work as part of a bid team in response to a customer’s ITT, or directly with the customer in response to projects or change requests.

The Junior Solution Architect will work as part of one or more teams to support the successful delivery of customer solutions and their on-going development and maintenance.

Solution Architects will be knowledgeable about the breadth of products within the RM e-Assessment portfolio and, therefore, a key initial focus for the Junior Solution architect role will be on developing product knowledge and understanding of the solutions RM can offer. A Junior Solution Architect will develop both product and business knowledge and understanding of customers through supporting business-as-usual activities such as solution set up and configuration activities and customer user acceptance testing and may include providing a technical interface between the customer and other RM teams. A Junior Solution Architect will work alongside more experienced colleagues or may take responsibility for smaller projects or customer changes.
Responsibilities:
A Junior Solution Architect will:
  • Build a detailed understanding of our assessment products and services
  • Understand customers and their business requirements
  • Understand customers’ solution specifications defined by the project lead Solution Architect and how these meet the customer’s requirements so that they can effectively support the delivery of a project
  • Work a part of delivery teams throughout the project delivery lifecycle in consultation with the lead Solution Architect – for example:
    • Helping to ensure that development items are accurately documented for the development teams and supporting their understanding of customers’ requirements
    • Supporting the testing of development changes by the internal QA team by ensuring that our QA team understands the expected customer use cases and any required configuration or setup
  • Work directly with and assist customers during user acceptance testing phases both during initial project delivery and during subsequent change periods – for example:
    • Liaising between the customer and internal teams to ensure that any necessary configuration or data setup for UAT testing is understood and completed
    • Acting as a point of contact for questions or issues escalated from the internal support team
    • Helping to ensure that any issues identified are documented and correctly prioritised to meet the customer’s expectations
  • Work directly with customers and in consultation with the lead Solution Architect to support any required data setup and solution configuration activities during live service particularly ahead of examination sessions
  • Take responsibility for documentation preparation and maintenance in consultation with the lead Solution Architect.
Facts & Figures
  • Work as part of a delivery team for 1 or more customers or projects to deliver multi-million-pound contracts lasting anything between a few months for a single-session contract to multiple years for long-term contracts.
Decision Making
  • A Junior Solution Architect will work closely with a customer or project lead Solution Architect. All key decisions will be in consultation with the lead Solution Architect but a Junior Solution Architect will take independent responsibility for managing business as usual activities including customer communication as they gain experience.
Impact & Influence
  • A Junior Solution Architect will work closely with other individuals working on a project, including individuals from multiple RM internal teams across the UK, India and Australia.
  • They will work with customer technical teams to help to build strong customer relationships.
Experience:
We recognise that someone joining RM as a Junior Solution Architect will not have prior knowledge of our solutions and so they will be supported to develop this knowledge through working on different projects and with a range of customers. They must be flexible and adaptable to take on a range of tasks throughout a technical delivery project and able to work to tight timescales. They must demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning and for their own personal and career development.

A Junior Solution Architect must be able to understand and communicate technical information and will further develop these skills through working directly with a range of internal teams including offshore teams and with both UK and international customers. Initially Junior Solution Architects are more likely to work directly with internal and customer technical teams but as they develop will work with a wider range of internal and external stakeholders including business senior leaders.

All of our assessment solutions are highly technically solutions based on our own platforms that we develop ourselves. Junior Solution Architects are likely to come from a range of technical backgrounds that will already have allowed then to develop a subset of the technical and broader soft skills required for a Solution Architect. They may, for example, have prior experience of working directly with customers through a previous role. As they develop in the role, the Junior Solution architect will broaden their range of skills and be supported in their development areas. Potential technical backgrounds would include:
  • Software development
  • Customer support
  • Technical operations
  • Business analysis.
