Job description

Laboratory Technician (Biology)

School Information Sheet

Repton School, founded in 1557, is a leading co-educational School situated in the historic village of Repton. Five miles from Burton upon Trent and eight miles from Derby, Repton lies in the very centre of England. The School boasts a consistently fine academic record and is active and successful in a wide range of other activities. The School’s 640 pupils, both boys and girls, are predominantly boarders. Each belongs to one of the ten boarding houses. Repton prides itself on its long and close association with the village.

There are about 90 teaching staff, referred to collectively as the Common Room, and about 215 non teaching staff. The Headmaster is the Chief Executive Officer, with overall responsibility to the Governors for the success of the School, and specific responsibility for the provision of education, and for the teaching staff. Support services are provided by the non-teaching staff, under the leadership of the Bursar. There are about 20 functional non-teaching staff departments (e.g. boarding houses, maintenance team, grounds, gardens, accounts, H.R., sports complex, shop, medical centre).

The successful candidate will join the Faculty of Science which takes great pride in getting the best from all their pupils, and which has a very long tradition of excellent results at GCSE and at A-level and in preparing pupils for Oxbridge entrance. There are twelve full-time teachers of Science and one part-time teacher across Biology, Chemistry and Physics who are supported by a Senior Laboratory Technician and three Laboratory Technicians.

The Science Faculty has enjoyed considerable success in public examinations in recent years. Every year the Faculty of Science offers extensive support to those pupils who apply to Oxford or Cambridge to read a science or science-related subject, and have enjoyed considerable success in recent years. There are flourishing co-curricular programmes in the sciences, including both an Engineering Society, where pupils have the opportunity to explore science beyond the examined curriculum, and a very popular and highly successful Medical Society supporting our aspiring medics, vets and dentists.

The successful candidate will be joining the School at an exciting time in the teaching of science. A state-of-the-art science building, the Science Priory, opened in September 2013. Our aim is to make Repton one of the leading centres for the teaching of science throughout the UK. The thinking behind the building combines both the traditional and the modern. The concept refers back to Repton’s history, and specifically to the Old Priory building. This was both the place of work and the home of the 12th Century Augustinian brothers who formed the first spiritual community on what is today the site of the School. Similarly, the Science Priory not only houses first class modern classrooms and laboratories for all three sciences, but also the relevant social spaces (the Atrium, the lecture theatre, 360º library atop the building and ‘internal streets’) that enable pupils to see science not as three separate subjects but as a translational discipline which will prepare them for the challenges of the next generation.
