About us

The mission of the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health is to improve the health and well-being of children, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health. GOS ICH holds an Athena SWAN Charter Gold Award.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and ambitious scientist to join a collaborative team working on the development of novel therapies for a rare genetic disease, primary cilia dyskinesia (PCD). In PCD, cilia are immotile, or their movement is impaired leading to an impaired mucociliary clearance and recurrent lung infections. There are currently no therapies for PCD. In recent years, new treatments have been designed for rare genetic diseases. Among genetic diseases, treating those caused by nonsense or premature stop codons (PTC), are particularly challenging. Premature stop codon (PTC) and the resulting activation of the nonsense mediated decay (NMD) pathway could lead to the deterioration of the faulty mRNA and a defective protein. PTC therapeutics have been proven attractive in treating PTC related conditions. The most important PTC therapeutics are aminoglycosides and non-aminoglycosides components that can reverse nonsense mutations. We aim to develop a therapy for PCD where PTC therapeutics are used to reverse nonsense mutations in PCD patient derived cells. This is a part-time (0.4 FTE) position and salary range is £34,605 - £36,396 pro-rata, pa.

About you

This post would suit a scientist with a background in Cell or Molecular Biology and with a strong interest in finding a cure for rare genetic diseases.
