We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Language Assistant for the 2024/2025 academic year to assist pupils across both King’s College School, Wimbledon and Wimbledon High School. The post of German Language Assistant is to be a shared resource as follows:
King’s College School
Reporting to the Language Assistant’s Team Leader/Head of German.
The role at King’s involves conversational practice in small groups of King’s pupils preparing for GCSE (year 11) and A level/IB German (years 12 and 13), which includes teaching thirteen, 40-minute conversational lessons per week. In addition to the King’s conversational classes, there is a requirement to support the King’s partnership programme by undertaking a series of after-school conversational sessions on Thursdays in the Spring term and also participating in the partnership programme at King’s on Friday afternoons between 1.30pm and 4.00pm. As part of the role, there will be other duties also, as expected of most educational professionals, such as developing teaching resources, attendance at INSET days and departmental meetings, examination invigilation, departmental library activities and other reasonable tasks as directed by the Head of German/Head of MFL.
Wimbledon Common High School
The role at Wimbledon High will mostly include conversation lessons with small groups of students from Year 10 to Year 13 to prepare for GCSE and A-Level (GCSE Edexcel in Year 11 and A Level Edexcel in Year 13). The assistant will help in the preparation for the speaking exams, providing lessons in the target language, and supporting cultural knowledge. German is taught from year 7 at Wimbledon High, and the assistant will attend some KS3 lessons to support the teaching of German in the lower school. If the timetable allows, there will be an opportunity to teach a small group of bilingual students. The assistant will be expected to provide engaging and up-to-date resources, and to contribute to the projects in the MFL department, such as the lunchtime language clubs, preparation for students interested in languages at University, and language taster workshops, as directed by the Head of German.
This post is a shared resource for both King’s College School, Wimbledon and Wimbledon High School. Please note that there will be a separate contract of employment for each employing entity.
Person Specification
- A fluent speaker in German
- A university degree and/or teaching qualification such as TEFL, PGCE or equivalent or to have recently lived in a German-- speaking country
- A genuine interest in the relevant language and a keenness to promote not only the education of the language but also the - cultural aspects of Germany
- An ability to inspire and motivate pupils in their learning
- An ability to communicate effectively with young people, with excellent communication skills, both orally and written
- An ability to take work well as part of a team but also to be confident in using one’s own initiative
- To demonstrate effective planning, reliability and good organisation skills
Terms and Conditions for King’s College School
- Contract salary: £8,779 p.a.
- Contract period: 27th August 2024 to 2nd July 2025
- Weekly working hours of 12.5 hours., during term-time
- Pro-rata annual leave is based on the full-time equivalent of 25 days annual leave per annum plus 8 English statutory public holidays. As you are not expected to attend school during the school holidays, the expectation is that the annual leave entitlement will be taken during the school holidays
- School lunches are provided free during term-time
- Contributory support staff pension scheme – employees are eligible to join after 3 months’ service with a 10% employer contribution / 5% employee contribution

Terms and Conditions for Wimbledon High School
- Contract salary: £9,816 p.a.
- Contract period: 13 September 2024 to 30 June 2025
- Working hours are 10 hours per week, throughout the contract period. Attendance at school is only required during term-time
- Paid in 12 monthly equal instalments between September 2024 and August 2025
- As you are not expected to attend school during the school holidays, your annual salary includes proportional payment for annual leave
