Job description

Law Society of Scotland
Lay Members
Non-remunerated

The Law Society of Scotland (LSS) was established in 1949 and is the professional body for nearly 13,000 Scottish Solicitors. It is governed by a Council of up to 48 individuals (both Solicitor and non-solicitor). It has a staff of around 150 and around 650 volunteers (Solicitors and non-solicitors) assist in carrying out its work.

The Role

Lay Members provide the required vision and input to enable LSS to be a world-class professional body. They represent members interests and uphold standards to ensure the public have confidence in the Scottish legal profession. They also have a statutory duty to work in the public interest, a duty which they are strongly committed to achieving.

The successful candidates are required to attend around nine meetings per year plus any ad-hoc meetings which may occasionally arise. Candidates will also need to dedicate time to reading papers and information in preparation for the meetings and responding to emails about Council work.

Skills and Experience

The Law Society is open to applications from non-solicitors from any background but would welcome candidates with skills and experience in:
  • Finance
  • Governance
  • Strategy
  • Digital and IT
It is also very important that candidates have experience at a senior management or influential level with a track record of achievement using a collaborative approach and strong communication skills.
