The Faculty of Engineering consists of ten departments, and the Ed Tech Lab provides a service to them by supporting teaching staff to deliver an innovative digital and blended education.

The Ed Tech Lab, is looking for a manager who will deliver high quality, engaging, and inclusive digital education with our stakeholders across ten academic departments. Our portfolio encompasses projects, services, and solutions that support the aims of Imperial’s Teaching and Learning Strategy and enables scalable, sustainable digital transformation within teaching. The postholder will work collaboratively across the faculty and with our departmental Digital Learning Leads to evaluate, prioritise, and shape digital learning provision and ensure the team is optimised to succeed in its core work and innovation commitments. This role comprises two main areas:

  1. Learning design provision and transformation
  2. Operations and Resource management

Duties and responsibilities

Learning Design Provision and transformation

Operate within the established design processes and Systems, taking ownership for all allocated stages whilst ensuring integrity, reliability and consistency.

  • Oversee quality and ensure minimum baseline standards are achieved for all learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with Academic Staff/Teaching Fellows to provide pedagogic advice and guidance. This includes Design and development activities including curriculum design workshops across multiple digital education projects, ensuring appropriate Learning Design practices are put in place, understood, and adhered to.
  • Liaise closely with the Digital Media Specialists to enable strong collaboration and high-quality multimedia asset development.
  • Formulate designs and storyboards with clear narratives for digital content which include learning and assessment activities/ content in a variety of media (audio, video, simulations, webpages). These should make best use of appropriate tools and technologies to engage students and align with module aims, objectives and content
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging trends and technologies in digital education and lead the Lab in piloting and implementing these innovations to enhance digital learning.
  • Advocate for and collaborate on relevant strategic learning initiatives
  • Work closely with the Education Insight and Evaluation Analyst to implement success measures across digital education projects to support evaluation of the Ed Tech Lab’s impact

Operations and Resource management

Work on project delivery plans to track and align resources for Learning Design provision and deliver our project pipeline. Liaise effectively with key stakeholders, delivering excellent customer service, implementing robust governance structures and ensuring quality control throughout the lifecycle. Act as a point of escalation and liaise accordingly on behalf of line reports.

  • Lead in project managing a range of Ed Tech operational activities, supporting academic year planning on Ed Tech systems. This involves :
    • participation in user testing plans and schedules as part of ICT’s annual upgrade schedule of all Ed Tech tools. This will involve adherence to pre-agreed test plans and timeframes.
  • support rollover processes for any institutional Ed Tech system, to ensure online resources are available every year for departments in an efficient and qualitative manner.
  • Deploy technical support and guidance in a variety of formats for departmental staff on the deployed and supported technologies.
  • Deploy and coordinate training sessions for staff in Ed Tech tools and processes, including devising and maintaining an archive of training materials
  • Regularly review and adjust operations and resources to align with strategic goals, ensuring a culture of constant enhancement and excellence in the Lab's outputs
  • Line-manage (matrix model) a team of learning technologists, taking responsibility for employee lifecycle such as performance, annual review conversations, directing their work, motivating the team, supporting their wellbeing and professional development.

Personal and professional development

  • Keep abreast of developments in techniques and technologies within the College, in HE generally and in STEM and subject disciplines, to enhance teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Promote awareness of the Faculty as a proactive user of educational technologies through active participation with professional networks.
  • Undertake a range of networking activities, liaising with colleagues in other faculties, the Digital Media Lab, ICT to build effective working relationships and share ideas.

Essential requirements

Degree or equivalent qualification preferably in the field of Instructional/Educational Design, Computer Sciences, Maths, Engineering, Science and/or Education.

Experience

  • Experience of managing teams.
  • Experience as an instructional designer with proficiency in live (ILT, Virtual) and asynchronous (eLearning) instructional design modalities.
  • Proven experience in overseeing creative design process, concept, graphic Design and innovation development.
  • Experience of working with academic and teaching staff to design, develop eLearning resources and technology. This should include delivering workshops to academic/teaching staff on design/development of eLearning resources and technologies.
  • The ability to successfully work on multiple projects simultaneously and drive these through to completion, including requirements gathering and task management.

Knowledge

  • Specialist knowledge of sound pedagogy-based teaching and assessment methods and techniques in STEM disciplines in higher education, preferably in the general engineering area.
  • Knowledge of the evidence base relating to teaching and assessment methods and techniques generally and within specific STEM disciplines.
  • Creative ability to express complex topics clearly and concisely, in an engaging manner that will resonate with each audience.
  • Good working knowledge of Ed Tech tools used within HE to deliver/support teaching and learning activities/assessments

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong influence-management, needs analysis, leadership, and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to convert technical or complex information into easily used and understandable text and illustrations.
  • Demonstrable skill at using multiple training software applications / programs for instructional content development
  • Strong project management skills using established techniques and methods.
  • Excellent time management skills, the ability to multi-task and prioritise own work.
  • Skilled in the use of different forms of media technology.
  • Creative mind and storytelling skills.
