Job description

Course Overview

This course has three different options that you can choose to focus your studies on:

Electronic and Electrical Engineering:
The HNC in Electronic and Electrical Engineering will teach you core engineering principles and has been devised to enhance and fill the skill gaps for higher professional technicians or employees looking to up-skill.

General Engineering:
The HNC in General Engineering offers you the opportunity to study the discipline of engineering at technical level, and as such provide you, with a qualification that reflects your theoretical and practical knowledge at Level 4. Manufacturing engineers help design the most efficient ways to produce goods across a huge range of industries, from food to plastics and pharmaceuticals. You could also work in utilities or even the armed forces.

Mechanical Engineering:
The HNC in Mechanical Engineering is specifically concerned with the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about anything that has moveable parts. As a result, there are job opportunities for mechanical engineers in practically every field of work. Industries entered include aerospace, defence and energy as well as the manufacturing of industrial and domestic products, drugs, furniture, and foods.

Entry criteria detail a typical offer but the college considers all applications on an individual basis which means that we could make offers based on qualifications, personal profile and experience; if you have any queries regarding your offer please contact our Admissions Team.

Typical Offer: 2 A levels at grade C or above, or an MM/MPP profile from a BTEC Level 3 diploma, or equivalent, in Engineering. Five GCSEs at Grade C or above, to include English and Maths (or equivalent qualifications).

The recognised progression route for this programme is into the second year of the HND programme, which also offers the same three focused options.

Electronic and electrical engineers are highly employable and can find work in many industries, including electronics, automative, IT, telecoms, manufacturing, power, transport, utilities and construction.

General Engineering graduates have employment prospects where companies are involved in technical management, maintenance and development of new and existing production lines. Manufacturing engineers are employed by production and process companies such as food, drink, plastics, pharmaceuticals and car manufacturers.

Mechanical Engineering Graduates have employment prospects in mechanical engineering, for example: design engineering, design and development engineering, research engineering, concept designers and mechanical engineers.

All three pathways will study the following modules:
- Engineering Design
- Engineering Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Managing a Professional Engineering Project

The following modules are specific to your chosen pathways:
Electronic and Electrical Engineering:
- Electronic and Electrical Principles

General Engineering:
- Maintenance Engineering

Mechanical Engineering:
- Mechanical Principles
- Fundamentals of Thermodynamics & Heat Engines.

The programme will include lectures, practical workshops and tutorial sessions. Dependent on the modules, assessment can vary between assignments, labs, class tests and end examinations.
