Honeycomb is delighted to be assisting a prominent legal body to secure a Library & Legal Research Assistant to cover a 12-month maternity contract. The role is full-time and based in Belfast city centre.

Our client is a leading provider of advocacy, legal opinion and dispute resolution, supporting legal professionals and clients in navigating through complex legal matters. This role would suit someone who has at least 1 year of working in a subject specialist Library & Information setting or as a paralegal.

The Role

  • Provide front-line Library and Information support to all Members, ensuring that a first-class service is delivered.
  • Receive and process Legal Research enquiries in accordance with the company's procedures, ensuring that the enquiries are handled efficiently and accurately from receipt to end billing. This will include being able to:
    • Correctly identify the appropriate materials and information (hard and soft copy) that need to be searched/consulted
    • Interrogate legal information databases to extract the appropriate information
    • Identify authoritative data and weed the non-authoritative data
    • Present and collate the data in a comprehensible and organised form allowing the member full insight as to how their information was retrieved, filtered, refined etc.
  • Collate and index information into hard copy and soft copy bundles suitable for further dissemination beyond the Membership.
  • Support the activities and duties of the office to maintain an up-to-date legal information service and deliver effective and relevant Member services. These activities and duties will include:
    • Ordering and processing titles as part of the Library Bookshop
    • Administering the Members’ Subscription Service
    • Assisting, when requested, to deliver the Library Current Awareness Service
    • Data entry into databases and the website
    • Indexing of legal materials
    • Administering access and associated records for the members to external information databases
  • Actively promote all aspects of the Library and Information Services to the membership ensuring that members are kept informed of the range of services available to them and how their use may benefit their practice
  • Keep abreast of current topical legal information and Legal/justice developments both in Northern Ireland and nationally in order that an informed response can be delivered to the members when they enquire about such information
  • Retrieve and re-shelve Library materials and tidy Library shelves in order to ensure a well-organised physical Library environment
  • Obtain materials from external sources as required in accordance with the Library and Information Services procedures and comply with copyright restrictions in order that the membership have access to a broad range of extra information not held within the organisation’s own Library collection.
  • Undertake loose leaf updates accurately and in a timely fashion ensuring that the membership has access to the most up-to-date information available.

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above.
  • English and Math GCSE or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 1 year’s experience of working with knowledge, information and research in:
    • a specialist Library unit, preferably a legal environment; or
    • as a paralegal in e.g. law firm/ solicitor's office or chambers; or
    • in a professional services environment.
  • Experience in using key legal electronic e.g. Official Law Reports, LexisNexis and Westlaw UK and researching from subject specialist hard copy materials.
  • Thorough working knowledge of technology including:
    • MS Office applications of Word and Excel;
    • Online databases;
    • Internet research.
