Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: SureChill R&D centre, Splott, Cardiff
Reports To: Innovation and Product Development Director

General Overview of Role:
The Mechanical Design Engineer will work within the R&D team to help deliver new products into the market. The role will be involved in projects at every stage, from initial research, ideation, and product definition through to manufacturing handover. They will support design projects to help the company deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions to the end user.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ideation and concept generation for new technologies and innovative ways of applying existing technologies.
- Building, testing and iterating concepts in the test facilities based in Cardiff. Working closely with the Test Engineer.
- Developing parts, assemblies and products ranging from new designs to refining existing products.
- Presenting concepts, ideas, and test results to the business and potential suppliers / partners.
- Detailed Mechanical Design, using 3D CAD systems and producing engineering drawings ready for production.
- Identifying suitable suppliers and liaising with them to transfer design detail to production, whilst managing quality, costs and timescales.
- Travel within UK and overseas to visit suppliers / customers / end user / other stakeholders.
Skills, Competencies and Experience
- Relevant Design or Engineering degree (e.g. Mechanical Engineer, Engineering Design, Product Design).
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in New Product Development.
- Proven experience taking component parts from first concept through detail design and development to production.
- Experience in designing products for manufacture (DFM).
- Advanced 3D CAD user (preferably SolidWorks), able to create complex 3D models and detailed engineering drawings.
- Experience assembling and testing prototypes.
- Experience with a range of rapid prototyping methods.
- A wide range of practical /DIY skills to enable prototype building.
- A good understanding of Physics and the ability to complete basic hand calculations.
- Experience developing tooling with suppliers.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Good communication skills.
- Project management skills.
- Occasional travel to suppliers within the UK and overseas may be required.
- Passionate about new technology / engineering for low resourced areas / renewable energy.
