Our Defence customer is looking for an SC cleared Mechanical Engineer to join their flexible delivery team within DE&S. Working predominantly remotely with a requirement to be on site one day per week at MOD Abbey Wood, this contract is initially until June 2025 with proposals being submitted to extend through to March 2026.
Contract rate is up to £450 per day
IR35 STATUS: The role has been confirmed as inside IR35 and candidates would need to operate via an umbrella company for this contract.
LOCATION: Hybrid - remote with 1 day per week at MOD Abbey Wood

ROLE OVERVIEW:
The service has been created to fulfil a requirement to provide the Ships Domain Engineering Function with a flexible provision of Suitably Qualified and Experienced Personnel (SQEP) to complement and supplement the availability of their internal Engineering Civil Service resources. Providing an agile and responsive service to the Delivery Teams (DTs) to maintain critical ‘safe to operate’ outputs and support Ship availability.
The successful candidate will be willing to work flexibly and in line with the service vision of working collaboratively and flexibly, enabling Delivery Teams (DTs) to use a combination of individuals to produce a hybrid service that will largely produce outputs with the MOD.
A role within the expanding Naval Engineering Team will give you the opportunity to become involved in projects across the lifecycle of ships. As a member of the team, you will get involved in solving engineering challenges through delivering the Naval Engineering aspects of the projects. These can range from supporting the customer in procuring and designing new ships to delivering complex in-service changes for vessels, through the delivery of feasibility studies, technical engineering investigations and analyses, or working in customer facing roles.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS / EXPERIENCE:
- Ships Mechanical Engineering experience
- Recognised qualification in an Engineering discipline.
- Experience of leading technical projects to time, cost and quality through excellent organisational skills despite competing priorities;
- SC cleared
DESIRABLE SKILLS / EXPERIENCE:
- Achieved registration with a recognised professional body to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, or be working towards achieving professional registration;
- A broad understanding of ship machinery spaces and auxiliary systems, propulsion systems and electrical systems;
- An understanding of the issues pertaining to the integration of ship systems and equipment within ships or marine platforms;
- Understanding of MOD and DE&S processes and systems
