1. JOB DETAILS Job Title: Medical Electronics Technician, Clinical Engineering Reports to: Team Leader Band: 5 Department: Medical Physics & Engineering Location St Jamess Hospital/Leeds General Infirmary AfC Job No: 792 2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY The departments responsibilities include the management of an extensive range of highly specialist medical equipment and related services throughout the Trust, community and private healthcare including patient monitoring and life support equipment, surgical systems, anaesthesia systems, ventilators, infusion devices, ultrasound, x-ray, radiotherapy and medical laboratory equipment. These services are delivered by teams of clinical technologists and the incumbent is a member of one of these teams, responsible to its Team Leader. Team members are jointly responsible for the repair and maintenance of several thousand items of medical equipment. Daily work will include providing calibration, safety checking, acceptance checking and repair of sophisticated patient monitoring, life support and other medical equipment. The technologist is expected to work closely and effectively with other technical staff and other colleagues (medical, nursing and laboratory) in the specialist clinical areas for which the team is responsible, to ensure delivery of a high quality service. 3. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Responsible for the safe service, repair and calibration of equipment for use in clinical diagnosis, treatment and life support of patients. Work is guided by departmental procedures, quality manual documents and national recommendations with work objectives set monthly by team leader. Uses own judgement to determine suitability of equipment (in terms of patient safety) for clinical use, undertakes risk assessments. Provides basic support for specialist items such as intensive care and operating theatre equipment. Evaluates new equipment as part of equipment purchasing strategy. Carries out commissioning and acceptance testing on new medical equipment. Prioritises breakdown calls and preventative maintenance tasks using knowledge of clinical need, accessibility, loan equipment availability etc. Carries out authorised modifications to medical equipment. Also supports the construction of clinical devices as appropriate and under the direction of the Head of Clinical Engineering or designated deputy Proposes changes to operational policies that may impact on own area and other professions. Writes technical procedures for quality management system in own area of work using word processor, spread sheet etc. Maintains the equipment inventory database by recording own work and own measurements on medical equipment. Identifies and specifies spare parts and accessories to be ordered for own work and that of trainees. Supervises and take part in the training activities of trainee technicians who may be allocated to him/her from time to time. Participates in equipment support, relevant training and development of equipment users and of staff within Medical Physics. Travels to other hospitals, health centres and patients homes if necessary for the execution of work. 4.
