Job overview
The Mental Health Rapid Response Service (MHRRS) is a small team of nurses, a social worker, support workers and a team secretary which supports people in Brighton and Hove who are at risk because of their Mental Health. Referrals can be made by anyone concerned about someone's urgent Mental Health risk including individuals themselves, their carers, GPs, other health professionals, the Police, ambulance.
The core components of the Mental Health Rapid Response Service are an extended urgent response (including 4 hour response for agreed new referrals and enhanced "duty" for the Assessment and Treatment Service), for all people needing an urgent assessment of their Mental Health. A large component on the role is taking incoming telephone calls from individuals in a crisis. Brilliant de-escalation skills are essential along with robust risk assessment skills and the ability to make workable safety plans with individuals, to support them to keep themselves safe.
This post offers the Trust's £4,000 Incentive for band 5-7 Nurses & Practitioners, as well as a relocation package up to a maximum of £8,000 (subject to terms and conditions).
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an experienced qualified professional (Mental Health nurse, occupational therapist or social worker) who can demonstrate excellent assessment and communication skills, in working with people in the community and their family members, experiencing a Mental Health crisis and the ability to deliver a companionate, person-centred and high quality service to patients, carers and others who contact the service.
You will need to have an exemplary telephone manner and be able to de-escalate distressed callers and safety plan with them. You will also need to be supportive of carers and involve them in making safe plans regarding their loved ones, as necessary. You will need to have excellent risk assessment skills and make quick and safe decisions about service users.
Working for our organisation
The role is based across a 7 day a week working pattern with early and late shifts. Staff are currently based at Mill View hospital, and are required to carry out home visits so the ability to travel in the geographical area in an effective manner is essential.
There is a good supervision structure in place and opportunities for training and development.
MHRRS sit alongside the community teams but we form part of the urgent care crisis care pathway In Brighton, along with the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team, The Haven and the Mental Health Liaison team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The role of a band 6 practitioner within MHRRS is to support anyone calling into the service who has concerns about someone else's or their own Mental Health when they are presenting as being at risk. You will need to be adept at establishing what is going on with an individual, what risks are present and then make a plan about how to proceed. You will need to support the band 4 support, time and recovery workers who will need to discuss all calls which they take with you. The band 6's have to ensure that they are aware of any decisions which are made, to ensure the best outcomes for people and their support network.
When clinically indicated, you will need to organise a comprehensive Mental Health assessment of the individual at risk. You will need to make a plan with them of how they can be best supported to remain safe and to receive treatment for their Mental Health condition. You will then need to liaise with the appropriate services to ensure the individual gets this. You will need to write up the appropriate documentation for both every call you take and also every assessment you complete.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with current registration [Mental Health/LD/Adult], appropriate to the job role
  • Completion of Mentorship Course/ENB equivalent
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Knowledge/Experience
Essential criteria
  • Significant post qualifying experience in the relevant care group
  • Experience of working alongside people with complex health problems in the designated care group
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience of providing a range of clinical interventions to people in the designated care group with a variety of health problems
  • Experience of working consultatively with professionals
  • Experience of conducting clinical assessments including risk assessments
  • Experience of partnership working within and across various statutory and non statutory teams and agencies
  • Experience of working within the CPA process
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Previous experience of working in the community
