We are a dynamic local authority providing essential services to the people of Gloucester. Our main office, based in the Eastgate Centre on Eastgate Street in the heart of the city, is an accessible, modern and light space designed for collaborative working and finding new ways to work. It's all open plan, with a living green wall and other plants without set desks, so you can sit next to someone new every day.  We're always looking to improve how we work and we offer flexible and agile working to give our people a great work life balance.

The Museum of Gloucester is looking for a Museum CollectionsDecant Coordinator to manage and deliver the Folk Decant Project. It’s an exciting time to be part of the service with several major Collections projects that are currently underway; including a complete review and rationalisation of all collections, alongside rehousing of the 25,0000 objects stored at the former Gloucester Life Museum. This is a great opportunity for someone who is keen to develop in their collections and project management skills.

About the role…

The Museum of Gloucester tells the story of the city’s origins as a Roman settlement and its subsequent development through the Dark Ages and Medieval period. The extensive archaeology collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror, impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Table Set, the oldest complete backgammon set in the world. The collections also include natural history, geology, social, industrial and maritime history, costume and art.

Since 2021, Gloucester Historic Buildings Ltd operates the former Gloucester Life Museum building as a community and events heritage centre through Gloucester Civic Trust (GCT). The collections onsite are largely social history objects dating from the 16th century to modern day. Some of these collections are on loan to GCT but the remainder form part of a 5 year project to decant and rehouse them. This project is due to be completed by February 2027.

This role will coordinate, supervise and deliver the remainder of the decant project – working to repack, inventory and condition check the collections, alongside the collections team and volunteers. You will work closely with the Collections Team leader to coordinate moving the collections to new stores at the Museum of Gloucester, ensuring that locations are accurately recorded and updated. You will also engage and develop relationships with stakeholders and partners, in particular staff and trustees of GCT; meeting with them regularly to ensure all relevant parties are kept up to date.

You will be trained to use MODES, our Collections Management System: updating and checking catalogue entries, resolve long term loans, as well as using it to answer enquiries from the public and researchers. You will also contribute regular content to the website and social media platforms such as monthly blog posts, newsletter content and interesting finds.

What we need from you…

You will be passionate about the care and management of collections and history. You will have a working knowledge of collections care and preventive conservation measures.  The collections being moved are predominantly social history from the last 400 years but there may also be industrial heritage, archaeology and other types of collections. You must be confident in handling a variety of different size and types of objects, have the ability to understand how to assess condition and packing needs, as well as long term storage requirements. You will also need to risk assess both in the moment and ahead of time, understanding what support and materials will be required and coordinate any health and safety requirements.

You will be confident about engaging with people, and able to handle a wide range of customers, volunteers and stakeholders in a variety of ways. Strong communication skills are key, especially under pressure and in a fast-moving environment with changing priorities.

Previous experience of managing projects, either large or small, and collections movement projects is desirable. Adaptability and a flexible approach will be key to this role. Teamwork is essential, as we are a close-knit team but you must also have the confidence to work independently and set goals and priorities. Attention to detail is also critical especially in the care of the collection.

This role is also physically demanding as moving collection objects, furniture and equipment in difficult spaces can be frequent. This role will be based predominantly at the former Gloucester Life Museum, which is a listed 16th century set of three houses and shop fronts, brought together to form one building in the 20th century.

This role is 4 days a week – currently our core days working on the project are Tuesday-Thursday so ability to work on these days is critical with flexibility around the fourth day.

What we can do for you…

You will receive the following:

  • Flexible working pattern
  • Excellent Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
  • Generous annual leave entitlement - 25 days annual leave rising to 30 days after 5 years continuous service (pro-rata for part-time staff)
  • An option to purchase 10 days of additional leave per year (pro rata for part-time staff)
  • Regular job-specific training, career development and qualification opportunities
  • Supportive and positive working environment with regular, robust supervision
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) that provides free, confidential, counselling and advice for employees, available 24 hours a day, online and by telephone, and an in-house Occupational Health service
  • Cycle to Work scheme (Salary Sacrifice -T&C apply)
  • Employee discount scheme
  • Discounted tickets for local events, and reduced rate use of GL1 facilities
  • Access to employee led networks such as Black Worker’s, Prism (LGBT+), Carers, Disability and the Young Employees Network, and opportunities to participate in our Equalities Working Group.
