Job description

The National Education Union is a force for change in the world of education, bringing together more than 450,000 teachers, lecturers, support staff and leaders working in maintained and independent schools and colleges across the UK.

Our National Organising Team is a nationally managed and regionally deployed team whose role is to work with our members, activists and potential activists to shape the future of education.

As the National Organiser for Equalities and Activist Development you will draw on your extensive leadership and interpersonal skills to put into operation the unions strategic aims for Equality organising, working alongside other key stakeholders to develop our organising forums and ensure that our equality work remains at the heart of what we do.

You will act as the union’s central point of expertise and guidance with regard to equalities organising and activist development, including digital organising, liaising closely with other senior staff, regional managers and elected officers to devise and oversee a coherent programme of work that supports agreed strategic priorities and implements national organising plans.

You will also be responsible for ensuring that the lead equality organisers provide dedicated ‘convenor’ support all equalities organising forums and conferences (Women, Black, Disabled and LGBT+), including bargaining plans around collective issues that affect the lived experiences of under-represented groups; and project manage organisers to provide activist development expertise to other organising forums and national councils.

To be successful in this role you will need to have significant experience of successfully leading and managing a project team across departments, to achieve agreed objectives ideally in a membership organisation or trade union. You’ll also enjoy managing people and are experienced in building and supporting a mixed discipline team. You will also need to have an excellent understanding of how to operate within the political, educational and legal context of the union’s work, particularly around equality organising, including proven expertise across all four equality strands – Women, Black, LGBT+ and Disabled.

Prospective applicants are also advised that this role is nationally mobile, may be regionally based (in one of the NEU regional offices, but not exclusively at home) but will be expected to regularly visit Hamilton House.

Due to the nature of the role there will be a requirement to attend regular activities, conferences, including annual conference and meetings away from the normal place of work, which will involve stays away from home.  A full and valid UK driving licence is also required at the point of application.

The role-holder will also be required to share the characteristics of at least one of the following equality strands: women, LGBT+, black, disabled.

In addition to salary, we offer good conditions including a non-superannuable luncheon allowance currently set at £1308, 35 days annual leave plus Christmas closure days and a defined benefit pension scheme. Salary and benefits will be pro-rata for part-time applicants.
