The National Union of Journalists is hiring and looking for experienced Trade UnionOfficials and Organisers to join its team of dedicated industrial staff representing journalists throughout the UK and Ireland. Based out of its London, Kings Cross, head office the NUJ is recruiting for Senior Officials and Organisers – working across a range of sectors including Broadcasting, Magazine, Book publishing and Wales. We are looking for experienced officials that are seeking a new challenge and are able to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:
- recruitment and retention
- planning and tailoring effective recruitment strategies organising workplaces
- negotiating collective agreements
- representing the interests of members
- organising and co-ordinating advice and information services
- carrying out research and report writing
- working within a committee structure and servicing meetings
- identifying issues facing members and developing strategies and responses
- lobbying and campaigning on key policy issues
- line management (where applicable)
Favourable applicants will:
- be educated to degree level and/or have at least five years Trade Union experience
- have an excellent understanding of the practical application of current employment law
- have some knowledge about the main companies and organisations with the journalistic industry
- be able to deal sympathetically and efficiently with collective and individual problems and grievances and to represent individual workers and workplace groups effectively
- be able to prioritise and work to deadlines
- be able to work on own initiative and in a flexible manner to respond to urgent or immediate issues
- be able to work flexibly, including some travel
- have an working understanding of equal opportunities practices and legislation
- be able to work within a team harmoniously and collectively with their colleagues and union members
- have an ability to inform and motivate members of staff working directly to them (where applicable)
- have the legal right to work in the UK.

Salary: National Organiser £60,239.74 / Organiser £45,179.81
London Weighting: £4,000
Working Time: Full-Time, 5 days a week, 35 hours a week (incl. of lunch, on a flexible basis to include weekends and/or evening work, where necessary)
Hybrid Working: Minimum of 3 days in the London office and the remaining 2 days working from your permanent residence.
It may be necessary to work for 5 days in the office, when and if the need arises.
