ISG/Communications Infrastructure Services

Full-time: 35 hours per week

Open-ended: permanent

We are looking for three experienced and talented Snr Network engineers to join a team of experienced IT professionals in delivering network and telephony services across the university. The Snr Network Engineers sit within our Communications Infrastructure Services section, who are responsible for the management, operation and development of the network and telephony services to over 50,000 university users.

The postholders will be responsible for managing the network across the University, ensuring performance, capacity and security is maintained to support our digital services, and provide a reliable and secure computing environment.

The roles offer a salary of £48,350 - £59,421pa, depending on experience, and report to the University’s Network Manager. While the roles benefit from the option for some hybrid and home-working, they involve the occasional need to travel across the whole University estate to meet service and project needs.

The team would prefer full-time (35hrs pw) working patterns, however are committed to offering flexibility so would consider flexible working options where possible.

The Snr. Network Engineers responsibilities include:

  • Planning, scheduling and executing upgrades to maintain stability and security.
  • Monitoring capacity and performance to ensure optimum delivery of digital services.
  • Provision of technical expertise to a wide audience ensuring performance, security and functionality are not undermined by changes or upgrades.
  • Resolution of faults and performing root cause analysis to avoid repetition.
  • Maintaining awareness of technology and best practice developments as well as developing supplier relationships.

The Snr. Network Engineer (Security) responsibilities has the additional focus of :

  • Management of firewalls and security controls.
  • Ensuring consistency of security configuration.
  • Ensuring appropriate logging of network events and subsequent log analysis.

Candidates who meet the below criteria are encouraged to apply:

Essential:

  • Substantial relevant networking experience, demonstrating involvement in progressively more demanding technical roles.
  • Significant technical knowledge of and expertise in Communications Infrastructure including data and voice communications, voice over IP, wireless technologies, and network security.
  • Excellent diagnostic, fault-finding and problem-solving skills in relevant highly technical areas.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Full, valid driving license and willingness to drive as part of the job.

Desirable:

  • Qualification in networking or security.
  • Experience of HPE/Aruba and Fortinet products.
  • Experience of Data Centre Networking technologies.
  • Exposure to networking automation technologies.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Infrastructure Division provides the core platforms and technologies on which the University's research, learning, teaching and digital administration depend. This includes management of the University's data and telephone networks and support of managed desktop computing and open-access computer suites. Two resilient data-centres host large-scale compute and data services for research, and server and storage infrastructure for providing enterprise services. The division also provides infrastructure technologies such as authentication and authorisation used by University I.T. services.
