An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and innovative registered nurse, who is ready to further develop their career by joining our Occupational Health nursing team across Cardiff and Vale UHB and Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB.

The appointed individual will be required to work independently as well as within a team providing support for the junior team members. We will support their training and development and help them gain the necessary skills to develop their Occupational Health career.
They will actively participate in the delivery of a professional pro-active Employee health and Wellbeing Service for the UHB's and external organisations.
Knowledge and/or experience of Occupational Health and an interest in all aspects of physical and mental health and well-being are an integral part of this role.
The ideal candidate would be able to assist in the development of the service and take a pro-active approach in order to influence the health and wellbeing of employees.
Based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, this role is 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate may also need to work at other locations across CAV UHB and CTM UHB, therefore the ability to travel between sites in a timely manner is essential.
JOB SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE
The post holder will be responsible for assisting in the provision and development of a pro-active Occupational Health Service for the employees of; Cardiff and Vale UHB and Cwm Taf Morganwwg UHB and external agencies, in accordance with the statutory requirements.
  • The post holder has a responsibility for the provision of specialist clinical services and to advise employees on the prevention of ill health and other aspects of work - related health problems.
  • The post holder will have continuing responsibility for assessing clinical care needs and developing, implementing and evaluating clinical care programmes in accordance with agreed policy.
  • The post holder is expected to accept delegated responsibility for the management of day-to-day clinic activity.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

CLINICAL
  • To provide clinical advice and practice that is based on the specialist knowledge and skills of Occupational Health nursing.
  • Undertake health assessments for all potential employees in accordance with the Department of Health guidelines and Occupational Health policy with particular reference to "exposure prone procedures”.
  • Identify, plan and maintain the administration of the vaccine & immunisation regimes, relevant to the occupation, as per local guidelines and policy.
  • Undertake and manage own caseload of managerial referrals in accordance with Occupational Health policies.
  • Work in compliance with government legislation, trust policy and agreed Occupational Health protocols with regard to; implementing health and safety at work.
  • Advise employees and managers on the management of infectious episodes/illnesses/accidents and assess individual care needs with regard to treatment and /or referrals. Facilitate liaison with other disciplines, as appropriate to maintain high standards of care, at all times.
  • Conduct health surveillance as required by government legislation and UHB policy.
  • Give advice and support to clients who are required to travel for work purposes, regarding their vaccination and chemoprophylaxis requirements.
  • Participate in the induction and training of new employees.
  • Undertake workplace visits, for the purpose of risk assessments and regular audit.
  • Support current health and wellbeing initiatives regarding health promotion and awareness.
  • Maintain complete and accurate client records and ensure security of strictly confidential information and record keeping.
  • Support and advise employees and managers on work-related health issues, having regard for their physical, psychological and social well-being, as may be required.
  • Proactive participation in the development of and maintaining an efficient use of Cohort the Occupational Health service’s electronic database.
  • The post holder will be required to work on all of the UHB’s Occupational Health sites.
  • To act at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct
MANAGEMENT
1. Take charge of the department’s clinical area (s) as required in the absence of a more senior member of staff.
2. The post holder will be expected to recognise appropriate skill mix, staffing levels and staff competency, in order to sustain the defined clinical areas.
3. Maintain effective and efficient communication with the Band 7 Occupational Health Nurse Advisor and other members of the multidisciplinary team, on issues relating to the department e.g. progress and difficulties to be addressed.
4. Act in accordance with the legal requirements and statutory rules, relating to practice and all Trust policies and procedures.
5. Liaise with other Occupational Health departments/community services/agencies.
6. Participate with regular audit undertaken in the Occupational Health department and present results of audits carried out.
7. Comply with the departmental arrangements and the Trust's policy on ordering, storage, checking, recording and administration of medicines.
8. Participate in the Occupational Health departmental (nursing and administrative) meetings and represent the Occupational Health service at meetings, as and when required.
EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
1. Encourage other members of the Occupational Health team to take advantage of learning opportunities and to participate in the theoretical education on aspects of care.
2. Demonstrate nursing based research / evidence based rationale for clinical practice.
3. Maintain an awareness and willingness to participate in current research including knowledge of basic research methodologies.
4. Take responsibility for own personal update in line with PREP.
5. Will be required to undertake suitable qualification in Occupational Health in substantiating this post.
