Sheffield's Visual Art Collection includes artworks from the 15th century to the present day and explores a huge variety of themes and ideas. The current displays show artworks from the Collection on the themes of Abstraction, colour and form; identity; portraiture and the human figure, and alternative perspectives on overlooked histories. They include works by Prunella Clough Naum Gabo, Claudette Johson, Edna Manley, Grayson Perry, Keith Piper, Bridget Riley, Lesley Sanderson, JMW Turner and Mark Wallinger.
Looking Forward is a five year project supported by the Ampersand Foundation to provide a bridge between the Graves Gallery of today and that of the future. It has re-invigorated the experience of visiting the Graves and built on its reputation as an 'oasis' in Sheffield's city centre.
Each year one third of the displays have been re-hung, allowing visitors to enjoy even more of the city's collection, their collection. New Dialogues is a key part of this project. This is an opportunity for an artist/s to create new work that opens up dialogues within the collection whilst supporting Visual Artists to develop their own practice.
We know from visitor feedback that juxtaposing contemporary works alongside historic works has the capacity to encourage greater reflection in visitors and help them find new ways to consider the themes and ideas explored in the displays. We expect these commissions to bring alternative viewpoints to the fore and offer new and varied perspectives on the city's Visual Art Collection and the Graves Gallery.
We would like visitors (and people who don't currently visit) to feel an ownership of, and connection with, their Visual Art Collection. This opportunity is open to all Visual Artists including those from underrepresented communities and with valuable lived experience that can offer new perspectives on the Visual Art Collection and individual works within it.
