Job description

Service Care, in partnership with Sussex Police, is delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Technician. This role is instrumental in creating and maintaining payroll records, administering pension schemes, and ensuring accurate and timely payments for Police Officers, Police Staff, and Pensioners.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE: The Payroll Technician plays a vital role in creating and maintaining payroll records, administering pension schemes, and contributing to the proper functioning of the Payroll Department. The goal is to ensure accurate and timely payment for Police Officers, Police Staff, and Pensioners while providing consistent advice and guidance.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:

  1. Process all documents related to payments, ensuring compliance with relevant Conditions of Service, Force Policies, and statutory legislation for accurate and timely payments.
  2. Answer queries from Police Officers, Police Staff, Pension Administrators, and Pensioners, providing advice and guidance on pay-related issues.
  3. Commence, amend, and cease records of police pensioners, ensuring accurate and timely pension payments.
  4. Investigate and correct anomalies in pay calculation runs, manage queries, and process overtime payments.
  5. Identify and correct discrepancies in pay calculations, including tax code verification with HMRC.
  6. Apply rules, regulations, and Force Policies for reductions to half-/no-pay during sickness, ensuring correct payments and deductions.
  7. Handle attachment of earnings orders from courts and Child Support Agency, ensuring compliance with legislation.

DIMENSIONS: Process accurately and timely pay for 12,000 Police Officers, Police Staff, and Pensioners. Work with minimal supervision, applying discretion in handling confidential information.

CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Knowledge/Skills:
    1. CIPP Foundation Degree in Payroll or equivalent or proven experience, or prepared to study for relevant qualification.
    2. Ability to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines, and exercise sound judgment.
    3. Computer literate with knowledge of Windows-based packages including Word, Excel, and Access.
    4. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and understanding of complex contexts in a process-driven environment.
    5. Thorough knowledge of LGPS, Police Pension Scheme regulations, Income Tax, National Insurance, and Student Loan application to payroll.
