N346 Youth Support Worker - Role Profile

INTRODUCTION

The Community Youth Team is part of the Community Connections Service. This services comprises - Neighbourhood Regeneration, Community Safety and Community Youth Services.

All have been brought together to create an innovative Community Connections Service. Community Connections is a multi-disciplinary team, working across localities, with and in communities, creating a relationship with citizens so that they are encouraged and supported to be proactive with PCC and other services, thus feeling more engaged and empowered to make sustainable changes.

The council has had a long-standing commitment to the development of young people across the city through the provision of Community Youth Services.

The Community Youth Team, has secured funds to improve the holistic health and wellbeing opportunities available to children and young people identified as SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities).

The core aims of this funding are to engage young people, aged 14 – 25 years old identified as having SEND and /or subject to an EHCP, in structured positive activities/learning experiences that:

  • Help reduce social isolation and loneliness
  • Improve social, emotional and mental health (SEMH).
• Improve physical health and fitness • Develop soft skills
  • Develop independence and resilience.

The Primary Objectives of the project are to:

  • Innovate – test new approaches through inter-agency working and collaboration
  • Connect – join up the system through a holistic, needs based approach
  • Create – address gaps in the system to support the safe transition into adulthood

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

Role AIMS

The successful candidate/s will work with the Community Youth Team’s Detached (Street Based) Youth Workers and wider partners and stakeholders, to;

  • Deliver the Aims and Objectives of the SEND Innovations Project
  • Plan, develop and deliver innovative Youth Work projects, sessions and opportunities with a primary focus on SEND Young People.
  • Increase young people’s participation, engagement and connection (direct and indirect) with SEND projects and opportunities
  • Develop and deliver opportunities for SEND young people to realise increased independence, empowerment and resilience.
  • Improve young people’s physical health, fitness and holistic wellbeing
  • Develop young people’s soft skills and skills for life
  • Facilitate opportunities for young people that are fully participative and inclusive, towards a co-produced model of provision with young people
  • Use a variety of methods to evaluate young people’s participation and outcomes in line with the SEND Innovations Fund requirements
  • Identify, facilitate and Evidence legacy opportunities for in-fund and post-fund youth provision development/opportunities

As a Youth Support Worker, the primary role will be in working directly with young people to develop their social education by providing programmes of activities, services, facilities and opportunities, this will include establishing contact with and guiding young people as part of the SEND Innovations Project. In addition, the position will work with young people and partners in a variety of citywide settings and will support the Community Youth Team in collaboration with key partners in the Voluntary Community Sector (VCS) and statutory services.

REQUIREMENTS

It is desirable that you hold a JNC endorsed Professional Qualification/presently studying for JNC in Youth & Community Work, or hold a NVQ level 2 or 3 qualification in a related area, and have English & Maths at Grade C or equivalent.

You will have at least one years’ experience of delivering youth work provision, including one to one issue based support work with young people, and supporting staff in a youth work setting, either project based or detached (street based).

Due to the nature of the role, the post will be required to work evenings and weekends. It will be beneficial for the post holder to have –
  • Previous experience of work with young people with protected characteristics, and additional needs.
  • Experience and/or a motivated interest in exploring outdoors and water themed based activities and engagement opportunities for young people.
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle would also be desirable.
