Job description

Department overview

The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Our mission is to deliver monetary and financial stability for the British people.

The Bank of England is a diverse organisation. Each of its 4,000 people are committed to public service and dedicated to promoting the good of the people of the United Kingdom by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

The Bank of England's Agency network gathers intelligence from businesses and other organisations around the UK to inform policymakers on the Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Policy Committee. It also communicates policy messages to external stakeholders. The Agency network comprises twelve small teams across the regions and devolved nations of the UK, who together form a larger team, or regional network, working towards shared goals.

Role Description

The Bank of England's South West Agency is seeking to recruit an experienced administrator/PA to provide support to the two Agents and to work collaboratively with the other PA support member of the team.

The role provides administrative, PA and event management support as one of a team of four people, focusing on business contact meetings and events across the South West. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to get involved with interesting and diverse work that spans the Agency network. There will be opportunities to grow and develop the role over time, for example by getting involved in data analysis work, outreach and third sector engagement, or digital/IT support, according to the skills and aspirations of the successful applicant.

The Agency team is mainly based in Bristol, but the role is hybrid and flexible and could potentially be performed remotely, to a large extent, from anywhere in the UK. The successful candidate is required to come into one of the Bank's 'hub' offices at least twice a month, and occasionally to the Bristol office to strengthen team cohesion. It is a Fixed Term Contract/secondment available for 9-18 months and can be full-time or part-time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Arranging diary appointments, primarily with external business contacts, for the Agent and Deputy Agent;
  • Making use of a CRM (Customer Relations Management) system to record and monitor intelligence gathering, including providing data for Management Information and to ensure appropriate coverage of the various sectors of the economy;
  • Arranging visits to the region for Bank Governors and policymakers, including itinerary planning, private office engagement and coordinating briefing packs;
  • Organising presentation and panel events, including online briefings, and managing related attendee lists;
  • Attending and participating in team meetings to help plan and prioritise work;
  • Being alert to and suggesting improvements to processes to help enhance the efficiency of our team;
  • Monitoring the Agency's expenditure and producing budget reports where required;
  • Administration for the regional office, including monitoring the Agency's main email account, answer office phone calls, liaising with the office landlord and ordering office supplies;
  • Providing support and cover for other Agencies when required, usually done remotely.

Role Requirements

Minimum (essential) criteria

  • Proven skills in organisation, prioritisation and time management with an ability to handle a variety of tasks at the same time;
  • An ability to work effectively and deliver to timescales with minimal oversight;
  • A good level of skill in Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external stakeholders, often senior business managers;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Awareness of the representational aspect of the role, as an employee of the Bank of England.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in using a CRM system
  • Experience in event management

Our Approach to Inclusion

The Bank values diversity, equity and inclusion. We play a key role in maintaining monetary and financial stability, and to do that effectively, we believe we need a workforce that reflects the society we serve.

At the Bank of England, we want all colleagues to feel valued and respected, so we're working hard to build an inclusive culture which supports people from all backgrounds and communities to be at their best at work. We celebrate all forms of diversity, including (but not limited to) age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. We believe that it's by drawing on different perspectives and experiences that we'll continue to make the best decisions for the public.

We welcome applications from individuals who work flexibly, including job shares and part time working patterns. We've also partnered with external organisations to support us in making adjustments for candidates and employees in the recruitment process where they're needed.

For most roles where work can be carried out at home, we aim for colleagues to spend half of their time in the office, with a minimum of 40% per month. Subject to that minimum requirement, individuals and managers should work together to find what works best for them, their team and stakeholders.

Finally, we're proud to be a member of the Disability Confident Scheme. If you wish to apply under this scheme, you should check the box in the 'Candidate Personal Information' under the 'Disability Confident Scheme' section of the application.
