Job description


Applications are invited for a Physician Associate post within the Haematology department in University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. This is a new post designed to support the UHL Anticoagulation Service and UHL Haemostasis and Thrombosis Unit.
The UHL Anticoagulation service is a nurse led service in direct collaboration with the Haemostasis and Thrombosis Unit. Both services aim is to ensure safe management of patients on anticoagulation and safe discharge of these patients. Additionally, they provide a considerable outpatient service for follow up and management of complex patients.

The post holder must be a graduate of a recognised Physician Associate training programme certified by the Faculty of Physician Associates. He/she will work under the direction of relevant consultants and specialty trainees, working collaboratively with other members of the clinical team within the Trust’s policies and clinical guidelines. The job will involve inpatient as well as outpatient work within relevant wards and clinical areas.
The post holder will contribute to patient care where relevant and exercise a high level of professional judgement. This will include taking medical histories, undertaking physical examinations, diagnosing and explaining conditions during consultations.
The post holder will exercise an appropriate degree of personal autonomy when assessing, managing and planning care for a caseload of patients.
The post holder will develop extensive specialist knowledge and experience in the relevant specialty, acting as a resource to the clinical team and allied health professionals.
The post holder will contribute to the teaching and training of other Physician Associates, other clinical professionals and students.
The post holder will contribute to achieving and maintaining targets and standards associated with the relevant clinical specialty.

Clinical duties and responsibilities
• Taking medical histories, undertaking physical examinations, diagnosing and explaining conditions during consultations.
• Assessing and examining patients, taking histories, ordering appropriate investigations, interpreting investigation findings, forming a list of differential diagnoses and formulating management/treatment plans accordingly
• Delivering care in a range of settings including wards, outpatient clinics, urgent care facilities.
• Attending and preparing for MDT meetings
• Contributing to the development of efficient pathways of care
• Taking responsibility for a dedicated patient caseload, where required
• Maintaining timely and appropriate documentation
• Developing and maintaining specialist medical knowledge appropriate to the role through relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
• Contributing to achieving and maintaining outstanding performance in the team
• To be accountable for the care given and to comply with the Fitness to Practice and Code of Conduct standard as established by the PA Managed Voluntary Registration Commission (PAMVRC) and subsequently the appropriate statutory regulating body, when this is in place
• Supporting and contributing to timely discharge planning where appropriate.
