Why this role?
As we enter an election year, there are new opportunities to influence policymakers’ attitudes to law-and-order, amongst the continuing controversies surrounding the use of stop and search, and debate amongst police chiefs, crime commissioners, campaigning groups, and community organisations over how best to hold officers to account for the use of the power.
The climate is ripe for someone with a deep interest in these issues, a know-how of the political landscape, and a desire to improve police practices and civilian safety using policy tools to join us.
About the role
We are looking for someone with experience of effecting policy change at the local and / or national level, the skills to lead campaigns and analyse research, and an ability to navigate the policing landscape.
Self-motivated and able to work independently with little supervision, they will be responsible for driving and implementing policy and campaign projects in line with our overall strategy and have a vision for how our research and community engagement work is promoted in the policy arena.
The postholder will also have a history of forging positive relationships with influential individuals in their policy career, and a connection to marginalised peoples affected by the sharp end of stop and search policing.
We are especially interested in hearing from individuals from certain backgrounds and identities whose lived experience is vital to a progressive, antiracist cause, so we welcome applications from marginalised groups, especially people of colour and other ethnic minorities, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Disabled people, working class folks, and / or those who have been historically excluded.
Qualifications and experience necessary for the role include:
- Evidence of policy analysis, campaign development, and advocacy
- Experience of engagement with policy makers to effect positive change locally and / or nationally
- Involvement in policy campaigns that have made a difference to a sector
- Evidence of an ability to adapt messaging for various audiences
- Experience of research and / or related advocacy
- A history of working collaboratively on policy campaigns
Skills and knowledge for the role include:
- A deep understanding of parliamentary and local council processes across England and Wales
- Evidence of strong networking skills
- Understanding of policing and criminal justice policy, racial justice
- Working collaboratively with marginalised and racialised communities
