We are hiring – your career at QBE, let’s make it happen! We are currently hiring for a Portfolio Manager to head the Accident & Health portfolio at QBE Re in London and its team of underwriters.
• An exciting opportunity to lead and profitably grow a highly regarded portfolio
• The portfolio consists of 4 sub-portfolios: Treaty, Direct & Facultative, Sports and International Medical Expenses
• Based in London, the team comprises 2 Underwriters, complemented by an Assistant Underwriter, with an additional headcount in plan

The sub-portfolios

  • Treaty: The book is a global Personal Accident and Life Excess of Loss portfolio.  The portfolio is worldwide with its focus on Europe and North America.  It also includes a small book of Travel Reinsurance Excess of Loss business covering PA/Medical/Cancellation expenses.
  • Direct & Facultative: This is a diverse book of business covering various classes including Group/Individual Personal Accident/Sickness, Workers Compensation (WC), Defence Base Act & Foreign Voluntary WC, WC Industrial Aid, Aviation Personal Accident and Occupational Accident business.  The book is predominantly focused on Europe and North America but does have worldwide exposure.
  • Sports: This portfolio covers a mixture of professional sports in the UK/Europe (including Football Teams/Individuals) and in the US/Canada (Baseball, Ice Hockey, American Football and Basketball). Coverage is on a per person and Cat basis.
  • International Medical Expenses: This book of business is made up of Medical Expense reinsurance business for exposures targeting business outside of the US with coverage is on a Per Person basis.

Your new role

  • Prepare the annual delivery of the business plan for the portfolio, monitor and report on progress, identify deviations, recommend remedial action and implement to achieve business objectives
  • Recommend, implement and manage the resources needed to deliver the plan
  • Initiate new ideas and concepts to support the development and delivery of the business plan
  • Positively promote the department, division and company as a whole to maximise brand leverage
  • Ensure strategic direction of portfolio is aligned to delivery of business objectives
  • Ensure the portfolio complies with legal and regulatory requirements | Adheres to QBE underwriting standards and best practice | Meets reporting requirements | Enables management of insurance risks
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including customers, brokers, industry bodies, business partners, reinsurers and colleagues, to maximise influence
  • Network internally and externally to promote the interests of QBE Re and to learn from others
  • Manage and develop the portfolio including retention and acquisition in line with the business plan
  • Underwrite insurance risks to meet business objectives including: negotiating rates, terms and conditions for existing and new business | Managing production and issue of contract certainty documentation | Ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations and guidelines

  • Understanding of class specific underwriting and reinsurance

  • Analysis and use of data for decision making and financial acumen
  • Understanding of Word, Excel and other departmental software packages
