Job description

This role offers a competitive salary, hybrid working (London two days per week), 28 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays and 6% pension.

Salary £32,000-£35,000 per annum

About the role

Are you a Press Officer looking for a role where you can really make your mark and add value?

Which? is the UK's consumer champion, here to make life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone. Our research gets to the heart of consumer issues, our advice is impartial, and our rigorous product tests lead to expert recommendations. We're the independent consumer voice that influences politicians and lawmakers, investigates, holds businesses to account and makes change happen. As an organisation we're not for profit and all for making consumers more powerful.

We are an extremely fast-paced and busy team and consider our press office to be the best there is. We regularly make national newspaper front pages and reach millions of people on TV, radio and online.

As our Press Officer you'll strive to make sure that our campaigns and advice are seen and heard across the UK.

You'll be working broadly across campaigns and free consumer advice services to find and create stories that deliver high impact coverage of the great work we do. You'll work closely with stakeholders across the business to understand what's going on in their areas and how we can build a narrative and plan media outreach.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Press Officer to work across industries and issues to build on your experience. We focus on quality over quantity, and get a real buzz when we see our work on the front pages or leading the news agenda. If you bring the passion and the talent, we'll bring one of the most rewarding Press Officer roles you'll ever have.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the Head of News in the development of media plans
  • Generate positive, regular press coverage in a fast-moving news environment with the objective of raising brand awareness among consumers and key opinion formers
  • Establish and maintain relationships with media organisations
  • Ensure high standards of rigour/accuracy in all our press activities/releases
  • Monitor and assess the media coverage of the organisation's core products and campaigns
  • Deliver well-rounded media plans reflecting corporate priorities

About you:

We're looking for someone with previous press office or media experience, which can include print or broadcast journalism. We are open to people from different sectors as long as you have exceptional writing skills, enthusiasm and the desire to excel in our busy team. You will also need to be flexible and able to take part in our out of hours rota.

This role has a wide reach and you will be confident to work with senior stakeholders and leaders across our business.

To do well you'll need to push yourself to juggle your multiple stories and deadlines. Most importantly, you need to be able to plan strategically and tailor your communications, across all mediums, to ensure our stories reach the right audience.

We also have these benefits for you to consider:

  • 35 hour working week
  • Generous 28 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays
  • Award winning pension scheme – when you pay in 3%, Which? pays in 6% (rising to 11% after one year of service.)
  • Discount site Sodexo which offers large %% off every day shopping
  • Healthcare insurance & Private medical insurance and opportunity to participate in Vitality rewards programme (at 6 months)
  • A discretionary death in service benefit provision equivalent to six times your annual salary
  • Free access to Which? member content and free access to Which? money and legal helplines
  • Work from (almost) anywhere” for 4 weeks of the year policy

Our interview process usually involves 2 stages:

  • Sometimes a chat with a recruiter or hiring manager by phone (typically 30 minutes), followed by
  • An interview on Google Meet (approximately 45-90 minutes) consisting of values and experience-based competency questions and a role related task on a laptop
