Job description

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Principal Accountant to join a dynamic finance team working at a Council near Nottingham, working specifically in General Fund. This hybrid role requires you to work two days a week in our office, with the remaining days offering flexibility for remote work.

Principal Accountant - About The Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively manage assigned employees, focusing on their personal development and performance, in line with corporate protocols and practices.
  • Promote best financial practices across the authority, ensuring compliance with the Council’s Constitution and professional standards.
  • Prepare final accounts for allocated directorates and assist in the preparation of the authority’s overall final accounts as directed by the Financial Services Manager.
  • Lead the Whole of Government Accounts process and complete all relevant statutory and non-statutory returns.
  • Prepare budgets for designated directorates and contribute to the preparation of the Council’s overall budget, focusing on both revenue and capital, with a primary emphasis on revenue.
  • Support corporate financial planning initiatives, focusing on the Medium Term Financial Strategy and the 30-year Housing Revenue Account Business Plan, as well as contributing to the Capital Strategy and Treasury Management Strategy.
  • Conduct robust revenue financial modelling and option appraisals for services, collaborating with the Capital Accountant on options with capital implications.

The successful Principal Accountant will have/be:

  • Local Government experience.
  • CCAB or CIMA qualified Accountant or Accountant qualified by experience (must be minimum AAT qualified and have significant finance and accountancy experience at a senior level).
