Principal Electrical Engineer

The Estates Engineering team is responsible for providing a safe, comfortable and compliant Estate for students, staff and visitors. We set the standard for Engineering using specifications, policies, and procedures. We are involved in shaping and future proofing the University Estate as a key stakeholder in all Capital and Revenue projects.  The Engineering team controls and manages all mechanical and Electrical assets across campus ensuring they are safe, serviced, and maintained in-line with current standards and legislation.

The Electrical team are responsible for ensuring that safe systems of work for all Electrical services on the University estate (whether Estates or Faculty owned) are adequate and fully adhered to by staff and contractors.

The team are also responsible for ensuring all Electrical records, reports, management procedures etc. are reviewed, maintained and updated and are compliant with current legislation and industry standards.  The Team is regularly audited on Compliance including dates of inspection and certification.

About the role:

The Principal Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the strategic leadership, smooth running of planned and cyclical Electrical Maintenance works and oversee reactive works whilst making sure all statutory compliance and legal provisions are met.

The successful candidate will provide senior leadership management to the directorate. You will participate and contribute to various cross organisation activities as and when required.

As the responsible Authorised Person, the post holder will be required to attend and take a lead in Electrical Systems Steering Groups, as well as attend Health and Safety panels and other relevant meetings as required within their area of specialisation or assign these to the deputy responsible person as required.

About you:

You will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to the Head of Department in relation to the specialist engineering systems of the University, with their particular focus being Electrical Services Compliance and Maintenance.

You will have extensive experience of the management, development and delivery of responsive, planned, and cyclical maintenance provision that meets, and is in line with the requirements of the service.

The Principal Electrical Engineer will successfully manage a number of large value contracts with Specialist Contractors maintaining compliant services eg Fire Alarms, Emergency Lighting, Electrical Testing and High Voltage Networks etc.  The Principal Electrical Engineer will be responsible for Tendering these contracts.

You will demonstrate a high level experience in building services or a similar engineering related discipline.   You will have specialist knowledge of Electrical services management of a large complex estate.

Utilising this knowledge you will provide assistance on major projects and refurbishments ensuring they are delivered in a compliant and maintainable manner.

You will hold a commercial Low Voltage Authorised Persons (AP) qualification a relevant Health and Safety qualification e.g. IOSH/NEBOSH General Certificate/ NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
