Job description

The role

The General Medical Council has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Research Manager to work with the UK Medical Education Database (UKMED) – a platform for collating data on the performance of UK medical students and trainee doctors across their education and future career.

We are looking for candidates with the leadership skills to oversee the work programme, building positive working relationships with senior figures within the GMC and with senior external stakeholders. With experience of managing a complex programme of work with multiple stages, the role will involve co-ordination between different organisations and external partners throughout the year.

The Principal Research Manager will act as a primary contact for UKMED researchers, as well as with the organisations we work with to acquire data. You will oversee UKMED’s governance processes and manage our relationships with key external stakeholders to develop strategy, and plan for future growth of the work programme. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Meeting with prospective and approved UKMED researchers to support them through the process of making applications and accessing data extracts.
  • Working with the UKMED chair and Advisory Board members to develop and implement a strategy for the future of the work programme.
  • Working with the UKMED data manager to ensure the data collection processes that underpin UKMED are effectively resourced and carried out in an efficient manner.

These are hybrid roles between home working and office working, you’ll work 1 day a week in the office, or more if you prefer. We may ask you to attend the office on additional days where necessary, for example team meetings.

You can find more detail on the tasks you will undertake, and the essential skills required for the role, in the job description.

How to apply for the role

Please provide a CV and covering letter. The covering letter should clearly set out how you meet the essential skills for the role, which are listed in the job description. You should also include a paragraph outlining your reasons for applying for the role.

We recommend no more than 2 sides of A4 for the covering letter, but it can be more if required.

We will assess the information you provide against the skills required for the role and let you know whether you will progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

Applications submitted without a cover letter will be considered incomplete and not shortlisted.

You’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people with several excellent benefits including:

  • 30 days holiday with the option to buy and sell more
  • A generous employer pension contribution of 15%
  • Access to a range of learning and development opportunities designed to support your ongoing progression
  • Hybrid and flexible working
  • Attractive salary that’s reviewed annually
  • Private medical insurance
  • Bike lockers and shower facilities
