Role OVO-View

Team: AVA
Salary banding: £75,000 to £100,000
Experience: Expert
Working pattern: Full-Time
Reporting to: Software Engineering Manager
Sponsorship: Unfortunately we are unable to offer sponsorship for this role.
Top 3 qualities for this role: Adaptable. Innovative. Mentor.

Where you'll work:

At OVO, we understand that a one size fits all approach doesn't work for everyone. That's why we created the OVO Way of Flexibility.

All our roles are hub based (Bristol, Glasgow or London), providing a dedicated space for collaboration, connection and teamwork. You'll also have the flexibility to work from home.

Everyone belongs at OVO

At OVO, we are on a mission to tackle one of humanity's biggest challenges, the climate crisis. And we know it takes all of us to change the world. That's why we need a diverse group of people from all abilities, gender identities, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientations, life experiences and backgrounds to join us.

Teamworking for the planet

Everything we do here spins around Plan Zero. So, naturally, the team you'll be joining plays a gigantic role in making that happen. Here's how:

We're the team behind AVA: OVO's Advanced Virtual Agent. We're using groundbreaking Generative AI technology and Large Language Models to recognise, understand, action and respond to queries from customers, helping OVO to become the UK's most trusted company and achieve our Plan Zero goals.

This role in a nutshell:

Production Engineering at OVO is all about augmenting our teams with effective Infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and Observability. As a Production Engineer in the AVA team, you will be supporting a multi-disciplinary squad of Data Scientists, Software, Data and Machine Learning Engineers develop exciting new application capabilities.

Working with colleagues in Data Science and Product you will help craft a roadmap that balances moving at pace with making sure that the infrastructure required is robust and built to scale, and pipelines are efficient so the team can quickly and safely deliver changes to the models and applications that power our AI ambitions.

Your key outcomes will be:

  • Developing robust and scalable infrastructure to power the project using infrastructure as code.
  • Mentoring and coaching the team to make the right architectural and technical choices to enable the project to scale.
  • Building and improving existing CI pipelines to ensure rapid and secure deployment of services and models.
  • Helping the team measure and understand the health of their data and data processing pipelines by developing robust monitoring and alerting of their systems.
  • Working with the other engineers on the team to architect and develop a scalable Python API that connects the data science models and other APIs.
  • Working with peers across the business to develop and implement the standards for managing data science infrastructure, pipelines and monitoring.

Within your first 3 months you'll:

  • Have helped the team incorporate new data sources into their models.
  • Have started scaling the application to automate 10% of all email traffic.

You'll be a successful Production Engineer at OVO if you…

  • Have experience in both software engineering and infrastructure. This role particularly would benefit from someone with experience in Google Cloud Platform, Python FastAPI, and technologies in the machine learning space.
  • Are passionate about technical excellence, able to be an authority and guide the team on implementing known standards. We operate with a strong culture of agile, with automated testing and frequent deployments to production.
  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and in meetings, and act as a mentor to others. Production Engineers at OVO hold an interest in building and supporting things to help our peers succeed.
  • Have a problem solving mentality and a willingness to get stuck in.

Let's talk about what's in it for you

We'll pay you between £75,000 and £100,000, depending on your specific skills and experience. If your expectations are a little different, we'd still like to hear from you!

We keep our pay ranges broad on purpose to give us, and you, flexibility to match your experience to our zero carbon mission.

You'll be eligible for an on-target bonus of 15%. We have one OVO bonus plan that focuses on the collective performance of our people to deliver our Plan Zero goal.

We also offer plenty of green benefits and progressive policies to help you feel like you belong at OVO…and there's flex pay. It's an extra 9% of your salary on top of your core pay to use as you like. You can take it as cash, add to your pension, or choose to spend it on a huge range of flex benefits.

Here's a taster of what's on offer:
