Job description

We ❤ making a difference in the world. We’re a FTSE 100 engineering company with a difference. Be part of a diverse, inclusive and supportive team on an international scale with a friendly, family culture.

At IMI, we make the world a better place through new thinking and technology. We design, manufacture and service products that control the precise movement of fluids. We apply our expertise across a huge range of industries, from life sciences to green energy to indoor climate control.

This role will be based at IMI Thompson Valves in Poole, Dorset. IMI Thompson Valves is a specialist, with over 60 years’ experience, in the design and manufacture of high integrity valves for critical nuclear, oil & gas, petrochemical and marine applications. Their products have an outstanding reputation for integrity and reliability in extreme applications, used extensively worldwide, meeting internationally recognised standards.

Guide our international operations

Join our Production Engineering department on our IMI Graduate Programme – and gain unique technology experience.

In this role, you’ll be working with our Production Engineering department to improve our machine shop and assembly processes. You will be designing jigs and fixtures for use in production for both new and existing manufactured parts to ensure consistency, ease of use and error proofing of manufacturing. You will also be preparing and reviewing detailed manufacturing procedures and work instructions in accordance with customer specifications.

As your knowledge of the department progresses, you will be involved with hands on machining and assembly of components which will give you the necessary insight into how to select new equipment required to improve/grow the business. This may also include the production of CNC programs using CAM packages and the design and production of new cells for automated manufacturing.

By the end of the programme, you’ll have all the skills needed to grow in your Production Engineering career. Spend two years running and supporting in several areas, on tasks including:

  • Assist production team with their day-to-day production requirements by providing them with technical assistance and problem-solving solutions.
  • Liaise with the design engineering department, reviewing new products before they are released into production, ensuring that all designs are fit for manufacture at the most efficient cost.
  • Produce accurate and detailed production routes, specifying operation details, work centres and time estimates for the in-house manufacture of products.

What you need

Our programme offers the opportunity to work across multiple locations, which means you may need to relocate. This could be within the country you’re applying for, sometimes it may be to another country. With roles available in locations across the globe, you can apply for overseas opportunities as long as you have the right to work in the country you’re applying to.

You will also need a bachelor’s or master’s degree (or equivalent) in a mechanical engineering discipline. We’d also like to see some key qualities in our candidates, including:

  • A fresh, innovative approach
  • Open to new and varied experiences
  • Excellent organisation with the ability to work efficiently in fast-paced environments
  • Positive approach and drive to develop
  • Fluent in written and spoken local language
  • Must be a British Citizen or a permanent resident

We believe that the more diverse we are as a company, the better representation and difference we can make for the communities we serve. It’s important that candidates looking to apply can reflect our safe, inclusive culture that celebrates difference.

What we offer

We want you to feel proud and rewarded for the work that you’ll do each day. That’s why we’ll offer a highly competitive salary from the first day you join us at IMI. On top of that, you’ll also have access to a great benefits package. During your time at IMI, you will uncover and apply your strengths through supported and actionable learning. You will be empowered to own your own development, be a valued member of our One Big Team, and help us solve industry problems, capture growth quickly and continually improve.
