Job description

Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Programme Officer who is keen to use their excellent organisational and project management skills, to support the next generation of economists. Working at the Royal Economic Society, within a positive and inclusive culture, you will be pivotal to setting up the Doctoral Training Programme providing skills based learning opportunities to economics PhD students across the country predominantly through webinars. With funding from the Economic and Research Council (UKRI) the RES has an ambitious plan to reach all PhD students studying economics to equip them with the essential tools to develop their careers.

This is a 0.6 FTE, 1 year fixed contract (with potential to extend subject to on-going funding). Our offices are based in Westminster, Central London and we currently have a hybrid model of working with Mondays based in the office. Occasional travel to meetings within the UK may be required. Job Overview

Working closely with the Programme Director and key RES staff, you will coordinate the delivery of conceptual, general and specialist Doctoral Training in partnership with the Economic and Social Research Council. The postholder will liaise with Doctoral Training Centres in the United Kingdom on the delivery of a programme that includes a residential school, expert workshops and masterclasses, and will work with the Programme Director and the ESRC to refine the training based on lessons learned from the first year's programme.

About the RES Doctoral Training Programme

The Royal Economic Society has partnered with the Economic and Social Research Council to deliver a national programme of research training for PhD students in economics in the form of a residential school (1 per annum), online masterclasses (2 per annum) and online expert workshops (8 per annum). Dependant on the format, speakers will be drawn from academia, industry, government or the third sector, with each able to impart their skills, knowledge and experience of the topic at hand.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • To plan the programme for the academic year working with the Programme Director and key members of the Education and Training Committee
  • Invite and coordinate with speakers
  • Promote the programme through Doctoral Training Centres, CHUDE and through other channels of the Royal Economic Society to maximise attendance
  • Manage the registration process for each training
  • Develop evaluation measures and report these regularly to the ESRC, the RES and the Programme Director
  • Manage assigned budget for each activity and ensure payment of speakers/venue
  • Provide technical support in advance of and during all online masterclasses and expert workshops
  • Develop digital repository of online masterclasses and expert workshops, securing permissions from speakers

For Residential School:

  • Undertake tendering process to select host institution
  • Liaise with the speakers and venue to provide necessary support materials and to ensure the support of the ESRC is acknowledged
  • Attend and event-manage the School, coordinating between the host institution, speakers and attendees to ensure a successful event
