Job description

We're looking for you to join our team at Arlington.

Arlington is a 2700 acre lowland estate in the heart of North Devon. All the teams working at Arlington have a drive and ambition to do more for nature, people, and climate. This post offers an exciting opportunity to help us blur the lines between people and nature, though the delivery of the Arlington Dogs Project. You will be working closely with both the Ranger and Visitor Experience teams to research, develop and disseminate a dog’s policy for Arlington. We want to understand how wildlife, people and dogs currently interact across the estate, and identify what we can do to ensure that nature thrives, whilst people with their dogs get the most from their experience here.

As well as having a good understanding of nature conservation, we’d like to hear from you if you have experience undertaking insights research and have volunteer management and community engagement skills.
Interview date 2nd April 2024.

Interviews will be held at Arlington, EX34 9NN.

Contact josey.field@nationaltrust.org.uk with any enquiries.

What it's like to work here:Arlington has something for everyone. Formal gardens, Pleasure Grounds and 2700 acres of wider countryside estate, which encompass protected parkland, magical woodlands, and tenant farms. A Regency house with an intriguing collection, and an impressive collection of horse-drawn vehicles at the National Trust Carriage Museum.

You would be joining an ambitious Ranger and Visitor Experience Team, who are working to break the hard lines between monocultured habitats, softening edges and creating a more mosaiced, and dynamic landscape.

People are at the heart of what we do, and we want them to benefit from the transformative nature gains that we are implementing. As our ambition grows, we will actively work with, and be led by communities to create incredible outdoor experiences for all. The Arlington Dogs Project is elemental to this ambition, disarming the potential conflict between nature and dogs, and helping us to communicate good dog management across the estate.

For more information about Arlington, please visit: Arlington Court | Devon | National Trust

What you'll be doing:Arlington is popular with dog walkers and the number of people with dogs is swelling. We love that people feel comfortable visiting with their dogs, however, this can also bring challenges. For example, we have started to experience a conflict between dog owners and non-dog owners and dogs and nature.

The Arlington Dogs Project will ultimately deliver a dogs policy that is clear, inclusive and provides benefit for people, dogs, and nature.
It will be delivered in 3 broad phases:

1. Research and Insights: we currently don’t have much information about dog use across the estate. You will be working with dog and non-dog owners, tenant farmers, Rangers, and other user groups to understand how different groups view dogs. You will assess how the needs of these groups differ, across the estate, in relation to dog management.

2. Review the Research and Develop a Trial: after reviewing all the evidence you will develop and test a trial dogs policy for Arlington. You will be responsible for the evaluation of project impact, keeping robust records, and measuring outcomes.

3. Implement a Policy: Finally, you will develop and communicate a new dogs policy for Arlington. You will connect with key local partners, our Visitor Reception Team, and recruit a group of volunteers to help disseminate information about the new policy. You will organise clear messaging for our website and across the wider estate to ensure people are aware of and understand the new policy.

This role will involve volunteer line management, with the expectation of some weekend and evening working by arrangement.

  • Who we're looking forUnderstanding of good practice in community engagement and involvement, as well as broader participation and partnership working.
  • Able to build effective and collaborative working relationships with property teams and partners.
  • Understanding of good practice in volunteer management.
  • Experience implementing new offers and policy
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Strong communication and team working skills.
  • Due to the remote nature of many of the sites, this role requires access to own transport.

The packageThe National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
