Job description

What you need to know about the role
As a Rail Technologist you will provide specialist technical advice and services to our customers and the rail industry. This role involves site surveying, product development, process improvement work and metallurgical examinations, working with rail infrastructure owners, academia and service providers. You will work to ensure live projects are delivered on time and within both internal and external  client’s budgets. You will manage and conduct Research & Development activity for the department and identify new opportunities to submit bids and generate future orders.

You will assist in delivery of customer technical service work for rail customers and in the delivery of annual departmental objectives.

You will need to become accustomed to the interpretation of and testing of samples along the guidelines of various standards such as BS EN 13674 and BS EN 14587.

Key to the role is the flexibility to learn new skills and adapt to the changing demands of project work. You will be taking complex data or results, distilling the core facts and you will be expected to present these internally or directly to the customer.

You will be reporting to the Rail Technologies Manager, and will take on various roles within an experienced team, either as a project leader or team member to complete projects for both internal and external stakeholders. This involves determining the scope of work, preparing bid proposals, managing people and equipment/resources, and reporting findings to customers. You will also partner with the account management teams to engage with customers an promote our products.

What we need to know about you

You should be degree qualified (demonstrable experience will also be considered) in the fields of metallurgy, materials science or another engineering discipline, with project management knowledge and proven experience of working to deadlines.

Excellent communication and inter-personal skills are essential.

Membership of a professional organisation such as IoM3 or IMechE would be an advantage as would experience of the rail industry.

You will become a technical expert in the fields of rail, rail production, welding, and maintenance so you need to have the drive and determination to succeed.

Communication is vital to the success of this role so you need to be someone who is confident, engaging and able to present to all level of stakeholders.
