The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (A&H) covers a wide range of traditional humanities disciplines and interdisciplinary and area studies across its ten constituent departments (Arts & Sciences, English, European & International Social & Political Studies, Greek & Latin, Hebrew & Jewish Studies, Information Studies, Philosophy, School of European Languages, Culture & Society, School of Slavonic & Eastern European Studies, and Slade School of Fine Art). Ranked fifth in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject for the last two consecutive years (2021 and 2022), and with several of our departments ranked 6th for Research Power in the recent REF 2021, the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at UCL is recognised globally for both its teaching and research excellence.
The Faculty has recently been deploying a new strategic vision for the coming decade, and has ambitious plans to develop its research, impact, and innovation activities. The Research Support and Development team manages the research development and performance functions of the Faculty’s research portfolio. The team works across a diverse and exciting agenda involving a wider range of stakeholders. Key areas include research facilitation and collaboration, performance analysis and reporting, engagement and impact, ethics, servicing of associated committees, and our Research Excellence Framework preparations.
About the role
The Research Impact and Development Manager is a professional services expert on research development, engagement, and impact in its widest sense. The role holder is responsible for supporting researchers as they develop new research proposals, collaborations, and funding applications. The role holder is also responsible for enhancing the capacity of individual researchers and research centres within the Faculty to maximise the public benefit of their research and support knowledge exchange activity.
The Research Impact and Development Manager also contributes to:
- Supporting the Faculty’s preparations for the REF, with particular emphasis on Impact Case Studies.
- Providing feedback on internal and external research funding applications in line with funders’ criteria to maximise chances of success and facilitate the potential scientific, societal and economic impact of research.
- Delivering the University’s policy on and commitment to the highest integrity and ethical standards of research involving human participants and personal data.
The role holder will also line-manage the Faculty Research Administrator.
The role requires a sophisticated understanding of and capabilities to support the delivery, evaluation and promotion of research development and impact.

About you
You must have experience of costing and developing successful funding applications, with knowledge of major national and international funding agencies, their policies, priorities and processes. Knowledge and understanding of university engagement with impact, innovation and enterprise and the ethics and integrity agenda in UK Higher Education, is essential. In addition, experience of the Impact Case Study element of REF is required.
You must have also have experience of developing and successfully implementing practical solutions and processes and an ability to synthesize complex research evidence and using your excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills to influence others and to develop effective working relationships with staff at all levels.
