Swansea University is a research-led university that has been making a difference since 1920. The University community thrives on exploration and discovery and offers the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by an enviable quality of life.

Our stunning waterfront campuses and multicultural community make us a desirable workplace for colleagues from around the world. Our reward and benefits, and ways of working enable those who join us to have enriching careers, matched by an excellent work-life balance.

About The Role

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is looking for a broad-ranging and experienced academic or heritage professional who will expand our capacity for work in History, heritage and partnerships. The Research Officer is expected to work closely and collaboratively with a project team consisting of a project manager, academic staff and external partners. The postholder will be responsible for historical and archival research on the history of Margam Castle in Wales and the creation of new narrative content that will inform AR/VR installations and virtual experiences. The role will create demonstrable outcomes that add value to environment, society, cultural life and partner organisations with significant regional/national impacts.

The Department of History, Heritage, and Classics is located within the School of Culture and Communication, in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. It employs more than 30 permanent staff teaching and researching in Ancient History, Classics, Egyptology, Heritage Studies, and History, and is home to undergraduate and MA programmes covering these disciplines, American Studies, and War and Society. In the 2021 REF, the department achieved a GPA of 3.09 overall, with 76% of its outputs, impact, and environment judged world-leading or internationally excellent.

Staff work closely with a range of external partners to deliver History and Heritage research, heritage-led regeneration and community engagement projects, and student placements. The scope of this activity has recently been recognised with the formation of CHART, Swansea University’s Centre for Heritage Research and Training. This post is supported by a UK Shared Prosperity Fund award, working in collaboration with partners Neath Port Talbot Council.
