Research Operations Director for Research Technologies

The Business Operations Director is an independent contributor who partners with the aligned functional leader(s) to mobilize R&D’s people, time and resources for maximum patient impact. The Business Operations Director acts as a dynamic, intelligent glue - identifying, defining, organizing and accelerating the operational activities across R&D that are critical to delivering the R&D strategy.

This role supports implementation of the function’s strategy to deliver medicines and vaccines to patients. You’ll drive the function’s performance through the application of efficient and effective operational processes and also support acceleration activities and key projects. As the Business Operations Director you will be responsible for providing close support and thought partnership to the function’s senior leader (SVP/VP level). This role is currently focused on support for the Research Technologies function but future alignment to a specific function(s) could change according to Business Operations’ resourcing model requirements.

The Operations Director brings:

  • FOCUS: Utilizing tenacity, expertise to accelerate what is most critical to R&D’s success – moving with pace to progress the best opportunities, simplifying, and prioritizing high value activities
  • EFFICIENCY: Leveraging data and business analytics to derive insights which will help improve R&D performance - collaborating with the best external innovation and specialist support where that makes sense.
  • HEALTHY TENSION: Being bold about asking difficult questions, looking for radical leaps as well as increments of progress and injecting fresh thinking to improve how things get done.

Responsibilities include driving the implementation and monitoring of the department strategy and operational plans, organizing and enabling the maximum effectiveness of the leadership team. In addition, the Operations Director will provide expertise in operational excellence, providing a standardized approach to applying GSK policy, process and enterprise support services to enable the aligned department to focus their efforts on high value drug discovery and development activities.

  • Translate team thinking into a sound and effective strategy.
  • Drive business performance and leverage data and digital fluency as required.
  • Bring excellent judgment and relevant experience to bear on a constantly changing set of challenges and opportunities – large and small. Regularly resolve ambiguous problems and challenges so that they can be effectively addressed.
  • Partner with Finance, Human Resources (HR), Development Acceleration and Effectiveness to generate resource management analyses to enable Leadership Teams to appropriately resource our portfolio.
  • Actively plan, facilitate, and participate at Leadership Team meetings to ensure delivery of strategic and operational line needs.
  • Partner with leadership team to develop and facilitate the execution of the team's objectives and culture & engagement plan.
  • When applicable, partners with quality and risk professionals to help translate GSK policy and facilitate risk identification to maintain a quality culture.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a business or science discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Working experience in pharma/biotech research & development.
  • Demonstrated Project leadership and management skills.
  • Practical experience working with change management approaches on a range of projects / programs.
  • Experience transitioning teams and organizations from a current state to a desired future state.
  • Experience in and strong ability to influence at all levels of the organization, particularly directors to VP level.
  • Drives change with a high degree of trust and credibility, providing clear project focus and direction.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Advanced Degree, preferably in sciences or Business Administration.
  • Experience working in Research & Development.
  • Ability to thoughtfully challenge status-quo.
  • Highly motivated, agile & adept learning ability.
