That’s where you come in. You’ll be a Review Officer within our Penalties Review Team, making important decisions in our pursuit of penalties levied on late payments of VAT.
About SOLS
The Solicitor’s Office and Legal Services (SOLS) department provide legal services to the whole of HMRC. Our work includes:
- The conduct of independent reviews of decisions made by HMRC which are requested under legislative provisions.
- Work on new legislation.
- Drafting statutory instruments and other legal documents.
- The conduct of tribunal and civil litigation across a full range of services.
- Providing legal advice to ExCom and staff.

We’re looking for Review Officers to join our Penalties Review Teams in Newcastle. Here, you’ll get to put your strong decision making and communication skills to great use whilst adapting to varying business needs.
You’ll conduct statutory reviews on penalty appeals using a legal framework called the Litigation and Settlement Strategy, taking lots of factors into account, such as the penalty amount and the costs involved in any legal proceedings. We’ll ask you to produce accurate and timely review decisions based on the reasonable excuse submitted by customers and you’ll do this by interrogating HMRC held records, analysing them and making appropriate amendments. Full training will be provided so no previous experience is required.
