Job description

  • Contract Type: Permanent
  • Ref: R00AOR03598
  • Closing Date: 09 April 2024

Are you a skilled risk professional with extensive experience? We have an opportunity to join the Finance Risk and Control team as a risk partner, contributing to the delivery of the risk and control agenda across the Finance function. You’ll collaborate with dedicated teams within the Finance function to identify and assess Operational and Conduct Risks and will provide analysis, advice and guidance on the management of risk to ensure that the business areas comply with the relevant policies, frameworks and regulatory requirements. Additionally, you’ll assume a leading role in the management of loss events, providing support to the business areas from the point of identification through to closure.

You’ll also have opportunities to lead or contribute to projects aimed at driving improvement within our function and the wider business, putting you at the forefront of how we evolve our risk and control management capability at Nationwide.

This role offers a varied landscape, providing the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across Finance and the wider Society. It also presents a great opportunity to manage your own business area relationships, work in an energetic and productive team, and to further your credibility and reputation with our Senior Leadership teams.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, at our Swindon office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

As a Risk Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading the relationship with Central Finance teams and supporting the embedding of Operational and Conduct Risk, ensuring senior management are aware of their risk and control environment they are responsible for
  • Supporting the Central Finance teams to evolve their understanding and interpretation of key Operational and Conduct Risk policies.
  • Conducting comprehensive risk assessments to effectively identify and evaluate Operational and Conduct Risks and performing annual risk reviews.
  • Support risk owners in the identification and assessment of new risks where necessary.
  • Reviewing and monitoring action plans to address any gaps identified through risk management activities. Identify gaps in action planning, pinpointing areas of improvement to ensure comprehensive and effective management of risks
  • Ensuring senior stakeholders have appropriate risk reporting and insight in place to support decision making.
  • Working in collaboration with your dedicated business areas and other stakeholders across the business to actively identify and manage incidents. This will involve the coordination of root cause analysis and the identification of remediation actions to reduce the risk of similar events reoccurring.
  • Leading and/or supporting other risk and governance activities as required, such as scenario analysis and supporting senior leaders in the preparation and sign off of annual control statements.

In addition to the activities mentioned above, you may be called upon to support the broader team in the execution of its responsibilities or working as part of a cross function group to deliver efficient and effective control improvements to evolve our risk and control management capability at Nationwide.

About you

  • Proven experience as a risk, control and governance professional, with expert knowledge in Operational and Conduct Risk
  • In depth knowledge of risk assessment methodologies and loss event management
  • Experience with interpreting risk policies and associated controls
  • Experience of working with staff at all levels as you will need to build relationships with senior leaders and their teams, including attending and contributing to senior management meetings or forums
  • The ability to communicate risk concepts clearly and jargon free to help embed risk management across the function and reinforce a positive risk culture
  • Experience of using Governance, Risk and Compliance systems as you will need to learn how to use our in-house system
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams
  • Manage concurrent and sometimes ambiguous priorities with firm deadlines, maintaining a consistent standard of quality and timely delivery for all deliverables.

Our Customer First behaviours are all about putting customers and members at the heart of how we work together. You can strengthen your application by showing the behaviours that resonate with you, and how you might have already demonstrated these.

  • Say it straight - This is about being honest and direct with good intent and saying what needs to be said in the room. It’s also about being clear, precise, and using language that we and, importantly, our customers and members can understand.
  • Push for better - This is about aiming high and constantly looking for better in how we work together and serve our customers and members.
  • Get it done - This is about prioritising what will have the greatest impact, being decisive and taking accountability for delivering on the end-to-end outcome.

We know applying for jobs can sometimes feel like you’re sending an application into a black hole. We review each application individually. So, it’s a good idea to call out your most relevant experience on your application to give yourself the best chance.

What makes us different

Nationwide is the world’s largest building society. With over 15 million customers, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK’s population. We’ve got the scale to compete with the big banks, but we’re not a bank.

As a building society, we’re owned by our members – that’s our customers who have their current account, mortgage or savings with us. It means we can do things differently to deliver our Purpose – Banking – but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society.

When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You’ll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You’ll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don’t have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.
