Summary: In RSSL we are customer focused, science led, and results driven. The RSSL Material Characterisation department performs a wide range of analytical analyses for a variety of food, consumer and FMCG companies. RSSL are looking for a highly motivated Microscopy focused scientist to join our dynamic and growing Material Characterisation team, to conduct projects for FMCG and R&D clients. Working on new generation ingredients and innovation projects, both with large companies, alongside start up organisations, to progress with new technologies.

Purpose:The role as Scientist II is to be responsible for performing and leading technical projects from within the Material Characterisation team. This role will take specific responsibility required to both execute and project manage analytical projects predominantly involving microstructure techniques. Your work would include large, complex projects that may be multi-department, cross functional and multi-country in nature. The successful individual would perform a range of routine and investigative analysis. As an innovative and self-motivated scientist, you will have the opportunity to directly influence projects and interact with customers in cross-functional project meetings. You will also be expected to present project findings to clients and senior stakeholders. You may be expected to review technical work and provide training to less experienced team members. Good organisation and communication skills are required, to work with external clients and internal stakeholders against a range of product types.

To succeed in this role, you will use strong teamwork skills to collaborate with others to perform analyses and report work in accordance with analytical standards, ensuring effective organisation of your assigned workload. Primary Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Always provide high quality customer service by ensuring effective organisation of work programs, integrity of analytical data generated and timely/accurate provision of reports with analytical findings/results.

  • Perform a range of routine and investigative analysis using various techniques independently. Techniques include Microscopy experience including Optical (Light / Confocal) Microscopy. Experience in Confocal Raman and Scanning Electron Microscopy would be advantageous but is not a requirement.

  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment.

  • Perform data checking and provide interpretation of results for R&D projects.

  • Generate certificate of analyses or external interpretive reports. Presentation of results in both internal and external forums.

  • Proficient in the use of generic and specific software packages require for the role: For example, Laboratory’s LIMS system, Q-Pulse.

  • Provide training and supervise junior staff in routine activities and methods.

  • Take responsibility for elements of specific projects and/or specific areas of general laboratory/sample administration and assigned housekeeping tasks as required.

  • Will be expected to work in different laboratories if the demand is required.

  • To liaise with clients, stakeholders, business development and leadership team to ensure effective communication during the project lifecycle.

  • Deliver presentations to technical stakeholders and clients as required

  • Manage R&D projects or defined areas of larger cross functional R&D projects

  • Work to the highest standards of safety and quality by ensuring that appropriate COSHHs, risk assessments and SOPs are understood and followed.

  • To complete, review and approve assigned quality actions on a timely manner.

  • Assist with the documentation of SOPs for equipment / tests and generation of necessary risk assessments and COSHH

  • To maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment.

  • Ensure training records are up-to-date and accurate.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent, with minimum 3 years relevant experience in industry or within a laboratory.

  • Proven theoretical and hands on experience within physical properties laboratories or using physical techniques.

  • Hands on experience working on Microscopy Techniques - Optical (Light / Confocal) Microscopy. Experience in Confocal Raman and Scanning Electron Microscopy would be advantageous but is not a requirement.

  • Travel may be required to support manufacturing sites on an adhoc basis

  • Proven track record of relevant laboratory experience.

  • English fluency (written and spoken)
