About the role:

As a Semi-Skilled Team Member, within our Heaton TrainCare Centre you will work within our Maintenance Team to help achieve set production targets. You’ll be responsible for carrying out maintenance and organising of our trains to recognised standards and procedures, whilst playing an active role in the Northern Team.

Day to day you’ll be expected to service, maintain and repair our traction and rolling stock. Whilst ensuring you keep people safe; you will be trained in and follow all the relevant health and safety requirements. The role will include operational skills such as underframe cleaning, body washing of traction and rolling stock, and you’ll also be responsible for checking that the components and equipment adhere to the specifications required.

This is the perfect opportunity for you to further your skill set or have a change of career, as training for all fleet and systems will be given as part of the role. However, you must be willing to play an active role in your development.

Key responsibilities:

This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:
  • Regular services, maintenance, and repairs on our traction and rolling stock and equipment
  • Basic fault diagnosis on our traction and rolling stock
  • Obtaining, using, caring for and returning all instruments, tools and equipment to storage locations.
  • Application of basic mechanical, electrical, vehicle building and plumbing principles and skills
  • Prioritising your daily workload to ensure daily targets are met in a timely manner
And because you’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning until late at night, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 60 minutes’ drive of the Outstation,

About you:

As part of the Level 3 role, you do not need to be qualified in Engineering but, having basic technical skills covering mechanical, electrical, plumbing & vehicle building skills is desirable. You must be willing to play an active role in your own assessments, training and development.
We’re also looking for the following:
  • Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to liaise and work effectively with colleagues
  • The ability to prioritise and be adaptable when things can change as well as managing your day to day workload
  • Showing initiative where necessary, whilst continuing to adhere to our working policies
  • Able to read and understand COSHH safety related instructions or willing to learn.
  • Ability to work to instructions, safety policies and rules and regulations
